About this program

The Department of Education Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services funded special education and related services to preschool-age children with disabilities (ages 3 through 5, and at state discretion ages 2 through 5) under Assistance Listing 84.392, with the most recent grant awards issued on February 17, 2009.

This program is not currently active for new awards. All 52 grants on record were issued in a single distribution on February 17, 2009, representing a one-time Recovery Act deployment. The program obligated $395.2 million in federal dollars across those awards, with individual state formula grants ranging from $258 thousand to approximately $41 million. Representative awards include $40.9 million to support Part B preschool services, $34.3 million for another state's preschool grant, and $23.6 million for a third state's program. The Department of Education was the sole funder across all 52 awards.

The program used exclusively Formula Grants distributed to states based on statutory allocation formulas rather than competitive application. All grants carried a completion date of September 30, 2010.

No current grant opportunities are posted under this Assistance Listing. The program represents a Recovery Act-era one-time federal appropriation delivered through the formula-grant mechanism in fiscal year 2009; no subsequent awards or solicitations have been recorded. Organizations seeking current federal funding for preschool special education should review active Department of Education programs under different Assistance Listing numbers.
