About this program

The Railroad Retirement Board administers Social Insurance for Railroad Workers (57.001), a benefit program that provides income security to retired and disabled railroad workers, their families, and survivors, with no recent grant award activity to report.

This is not a discretionary grant program in the traditional sense. The program distributes benefits under the Railroad Retirement Act to individuals and families meeting statutory eligibility criteria rather than awarding competitive or formula grants to organizations or projects. The Railroad Retirement Board processes applications for retirement, disability, and survivor benefits through its field offices nationwide; applicants contact the agency at 1-877-772-5772 to locate the nearest office. After claims examiners and related staff review applications, the Board notifies applicants by mail of eligibility determinations.

Benefits take two primary forms. Tier 1 benefits are equivalent to Social Security benefits. Tier 2 benefits are based solely on railroad service. The program also provides vested dual benefits, disability benefits for total or occupational-related issues, and supplemental annuities for career railroaders. Family members and survivors are eligible for benefits as well. The Board additionally administers Medicare coverage for railroad workers and their families.

Benefits are disbursed either as one-time payments or recurring monthly basis, with monthly payments standard for retirement and survivor benefits; limited circumstances allow for a lump sum survivor payment. Initial appeals of benefit determinations are handled by the agency's Reconsideration Section, which must provide a decision within 60 days. Subsequent appeals proceed to the Bureau of Hearings and Appeals, then the Board, and finally the U.S. Court of Appeals.

Business development professionals should note that this Assistance Listing does not represent a funding opportunity for external applicant organizations seeking project grants, research funding, or service contracts. Pursuit of this program is appropriate only for individuals or families seeking railroad worker benefits directly from the Railroad Retirement Board.
