About this opportunity
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) is issuing a single-source cooperative agreement to renew the Integrated Islet Distribution Program (IIDP) at Beckman Research Institute/City of Hope, with an application deadline of August 30, 2026. Eligibility is restricted to the PI/PDs currently associated with the award issued under RFA-DK-20-509 to Beckman Research Institute/City of Hope; foreign organizations and foreign components of U.S. organizations are ineligible. Clinical trials are not permitted.
One award totaling $3,300,000 will be issued for a maximum project period of five years. Annual budgets are capped at $825,000 for administrative functions, $680,000 for phenotyping pipelines, $275,000 for genotyping assays, $165,000 for islet procurement, and $330,000 for an opportunity pool supporting pilot awards. The program facilitates distribution of human pancreatic islets to biomedical researchers through partnerships with qualified islet isolation facilities, managing investigator eligibility, islet availability communication, cost recovery through recipient fees, and standardized phenotypic and genotypic analyses across the IIDP network.
The Research Strategy must address community needs, track records of leadership in islet biology, workflow timelines, administrative support plans, phenotyping and genotyping service development, and opportunity pool management. A Data Management and Sharing Plan (maximum two pages) is required. The award uses the U24 activity code (Resource-Related Research Projects-Cooperative Agreements) and is associated with the Special Diabetes Program. Scientific merit review is anticipated in September 2026, with advisory council review in March 2027 and earliest start date of May 2027. Recipients must comply with 2 CFR Part 200, NIST cybersecurity requirements, and NIH Grants Policy Statement requirements. Substantial NIH involvement includes designated program officials, project scientists, and steering committee participation.

In accordance with NIH standard peer-review processes, the application(s) will be peer-reviewed, and only meritorious application(s) will be considered for funding. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) is announcing its intent to issue a single source cooperative agreement award to Beckman Research Institute/City of Hope for the currently funded Integrated Islet Distribution Program (IIDP) to renew the program and maintain support for its continuing mission to provide the scientific community with important islet resources for diabetes research. The IIDP facilitates the distribution of human islets to biomedical researchers by establishing partnerships with qualified islet isolation facilities to prepare and distribute human islets. Human islets remain an essential resource for diabetes research to advance our understanding of human islet cell biology, and to promote the development of new therapies for the prevention and treatment of diabetes. This NOFO is associated with the Special Diabetes Program (https://www.niddk.nih.gov/about-niddk/research-areas/diabetes/type-1-diabetes-special-statutory-funding-program/about-special-diabetes-program) which funds research on the prevention, treatment, and cure of type 1 diabetes and its complications, including unique, innovative, and collaborative research consortia and clinical trials networks.
