About this opportunity
The National Institute of Mental Health is soliciting applications for pilot effectiveness-implementation trials testing mental health interventions, with an application deadline of October 15, 2027. All proposals must include a clinical trial component. Eligible applicants span a broad range: county, city/township, and special district governments; state governments; tribal governments (federally and non-federally recognized); higher education institutions (public and private); independent school districts; 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits; for-profit organizations; small businesses; public or Indian housing authorities; and other entities including Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, AANAPISIs, TCCUs, faith-based or community-based organizations, regional organizations, U.S. territories or possessions, and non-domestic entities.
The program supports two categories of research: pilot studies optimizing the effectiveness of previously demonstrated preventive or therapeutic interventions for broader target populations or community practice settings, and pilot studies developing and preliminarily testing innovative services interventions. Consistent with NIMH's experimental therapeutics approach, applications must explicitly address whether the intervention engages the presumed target(s) or mechanism(s) underlying intervention effects—including mechanisms accounting for changes in clinical or functional outcomes, provider behavior, service access, or service continuity.
Applications are reviewed for scientific and technical merit by peer review panels and the National Advisory Mental Health Council. Funding decisions reflect technical merit, program relevance, and program balance. The program operates under Assistance Listing 93.242 (Mental Health Research Grants). Project periods do not exceed five years and are renewable; support is determined on the basis of available funds and relevance to program priorities. Applications typically receive decisions within 180 to 270 days of submission.
Synopsis
Pilot Effectiveness Trials for Treatment, Preventive and Services Interventions (R01 Clinical Trial Required). As part of NIMH's clinical trials pipeline NOFOs, this announcement encourages pilot effectiveness studies focused on 1) optimizing the effectiveness of preventive and therapeutic interventions with previously demonstrated efficacy, for use with broader target populations or for use in community practice settings, and 2) developing and preliminary testing innovative services interventions. Consistent with the NIMH experimental therapeutics approach, this NOFO is intended to support pilot studies of intervention effectiveness or service delivery approaches that explicitly address whether the intervention engages the target(s)/mechanism(s) presumed to underlie the intervention effects (i.e., the mechanism(s) that accounts for changes in clinical/functional outcomes, changes in provider behavior, improved access or continuity of services, etc.).
Eligibility
Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession.
