About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health seeks applicants for the Mentored Quantitative Research Development Award (K25 Parent Independent Clinical Trial Not Allowed) with an application deadline of May 7, 2027. This award restricts applicants to those proposing research that does not involve leading an independent clinical trial, clinical trial feasibility study, or ancillary clinical trial as the lead investigator; applicants may propose research experience in a clinical trial led by a mentor or co-mentor.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), small businesses, public or Indian housing authorities, independent school districts, 501(c)(3) nonprofits, tribal organizations (federally and non-federally recognized), county and state governments, city and township governments, and for-profit and non-501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. Non-domestic entities and foreign components are not eligible; however, foreign components as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement are permitted.

The award targets investigators whose quantitative science and engineering research (mathematics, statistics, economics, computer science, imaging science, informatics, physics, chemistry) has not been focused primarily on health and disease questions. The program provides support and protected time for supervised study and research to integrate quantitative expertise with NIH-relevant health and disease research. Typical award periods are two to five years with ranges from $100,000 to over $1 million in total costs.

Applications are subject to dual peer review for scientific merit followed by national advisory council approval. The program operates under multiple NIH institutes and centers, including the Office of Research on Women's Health, Division of Lung Diseases, and National Center on Sleep Disorders Research. Funding is available through CFDA 93.313 (NIH Office of Research on Women's Health), 93.838 (Lung Diseases Research), 93.310 (Trans-NIH Research Support), 93.837 (Cardiovascular Diseases Research), 93.840 (Translation and Implementation Science Research), and other NIH mechanisms. The most recent application guide (FORMS-I and FORMS-H) was posted November 6, 2024, with career development-specific filtering instructions required for submission.
