About this opportunity

The Department of the Army Medical Command, through the Defense Health Agency's Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs, is seeking advanced translational research designed to transform promising lung cancer discoveries into clinical applications. Applicants must address at least one of five FY26 research areas of emphasis: Biology and Etiology, Prevention and Risk Reduction, Detection/Diagnosis/Surveillance, Treatment and Prognosis, or Health Outcomes and Survivorship. The program requires all applications to demonstrate preliminary lung cancer-relevant data and clearly articulate the translational pathway from bench-to-bedside or bedside-to-bench research. Applications undergo a two-tier review process, with peer review assessing technical merit followed by programmatic review evaluating military relevance, portfolio composition, and strategic alignment. Pre-applications are due June 23, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. ET, and full applications must be submitted by September 2, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. ET through the Electronic Biomedical Research Application Portal.

The program anticipates allocating approximately $9.1 million to fund six awards across two funding levels: Funding Level 1 (advanced/late-stage preclinical work or correlative studies) with a cost cap of $1.35 million and maximum three-year performance period, and Funding Level 2 (pilot clinical trials) with a cost cap of $1.85 million and maximum four-year performance period. Awards will be made no later than September 30, 2027, with obligated funds expiring on September 30, 2032. Research may be conducted at eligible extramural and intramural organizations, including domestic and foreign entities, for-profit and nonprofit organizations, with particular encouragement for projects utilizing military or Veteran populations, biospecimens, and databases. No cost sharing is required.
