About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for innovative research at the intersection of HIV and substance use, with applications due March 5, 2027.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), small businesses, nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), tribal governments (federally and non-federally recognized), state and local governments, and other entities including HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, AANAPISIs, TCCUs, and faith-based or community-based organizations. All studies must focus on NIH HIV/AIDS Research Priorities (NOT-OD-20-018) and demonstrate a clear nexus with substance use. Applications are required to include a detailed research plan, preliminary data, and evidence of research feasibility. The FOA supports both individual investigators and research teams across basic science, clinical research, and implementation studies, with all projects centered on prevention, treatment, or cure of HIV among people who use drugs.

The program funds research under CFDA 93.279 (Drug Abuse and Addiction Research Programs), administered by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Project periods typically do not exceed five years. Peer review timelines range from 240 to 270 days from submission, or not exceeding 180 days for AIDS-related applications.

Evaluation criteria include scientific and technical merit, research feasibility, potential contribution to addressing the national drug abuse and HIV problem, and relevance to NIDA priorities. The source does not specify award floors, ceilings, or expected number of awards.
