About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health is seeking applicants for research grants on Early Immune System Development and Ontogeny (R01 Clinical Trial Optional) with an application due date of November 5, 2028. This opportunity is open to a broad range of eligible applicants including higher education institutions (public and private), small businesses, nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), tribal governments and organizations, state and local governments, and other entity types; also eligible are Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, and non-U.S. entities.
The research initiative aims to elucidate mechanisms of early immune development in utero, during the early post-natal period, and throughout early childhood in neonates, infants, and children and adolescents with or without in-utero exposure to HIV or Anti-Retroviral Therapeutics (ART). Priority areas include investigating immune cells at the maternal-fetal interface, T and B cell development and maturation in offspring, local immune responses, and the role of systemic immunity.
The program operates under CFDA 93.865 (Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research), administered by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). Applicants will undergo dual scientific peer review by non-NIH scientists, evaluated on significance, approach, innovation, investigator qualifications, and environment. The funding instrument is a standard grant (not a cooperative agreement). Recent awards under this program have ranged from $39 thousand to over $700 thousand for research project grants, though the NOFO does not specify a ceiling or expected number of awards for this specific opportunity.
