About this opportunity

The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the fiscal year 2026 Vision Research Program Translational Research Award to fund translational research that transforms promising discoveries into new drugs, devices, or clinical practice guidelines ready for definitive testing in clinical trials, with a pre-application deadline of July 28, 2026 and full application due date of November 12, 2026. The program expects to allocate approximately $1.6 million to fund one award with a total cost cap of $1.6 million and a maximum period of performance of three years. No cost share is required.

Eligible applicants include unrestricted categories: extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, both domestic and foreign, as well as for-profit and nonprofit entities. If the research team is developing new drugs or devices, it must include expertise in the regulatory approval process. The Translational Research Award includes a Partnering Principal Investigator Option allowing for two PIs (an Initiating PI and a Partnering PI) with separate awards.

Research must align with at least one of three focus areas: understanding and treating eye injury or visual dysfunction related to military exposure; diagnosing, stabilizing, and treating eye injuries in austere and prolonged care settings; or restoring visual function after military-related vision loss. The award may support preclinical studies, clinical research, or a pilot clinical trial, but not a full-scale clinical trial. Applications proposing pilot clinical trials must also include non-PCT translational research components.

Peer review criteria include Research Idea/Rationale, Research Strategy and Feasibility, Impact, Personnel, and Post-Award Transition Plan. Programmatic review criteria include adherence to the intent of the TRA, contribution to the VRP portfolio, relative impact, and relevance to military health. The Defense Health Agency may share applications and reviews with the National Eye Institute for independent funding consideration. Peer review occurs in January 2027 and programmatic review in March 2027, with awards anticipated by September 30, 2027 using FY26 funds expiring for use on September 30, 2032. The Assistance Listing / CFDA number is 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development).
