About this opportunity

The Department of Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Fiscal Year 2026 Vision Research Program Clinical Trial Award, supporting rapid implementation of clinical trials addressing service-connected eye injury and visual dysfunction, with full applications due November 12, 2026. Applicants must have an Investigational New Drug (IND) or Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) application (or equivalent) submitted to the relevant Regulatory Agency by the application deadline, with documentation of active/safe-to-proceed status required by March 1, 2027, to be considered for funding.

Eligibility extends unrestricted to extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, including foreign and domestic entities, for-profit and nonprofit organizations. Independent investigators regardless of ethnicity, nationality, or citizenship status may serve as Principal Investigator. Research must align with at least one of three focus areas: understanding and treating eye injury or visual dysfunction related to military exposure; diagnosing and treating eye injuries in austere environments; or restoring visual function after military exposure-related vision loss.

The award ceiling is $2.6 million per application over a maximum period of performance of three years. One Clinical Trial Award is expected to be funded. Applications undergo two-tiered review: peer review assesses Clinical Impact, Research Strategy and Feasibility, Recruitment/Accrual/Retention, Regulatory Strategy and Transition Plan, Statistical Plan and Data Analysis, Ethical Considerations, and Personnel and Communication; programmatic review evaluates adherence to award intent, contribution to program portfolio, and relative impact and relevance to military health.

Pre-applications are due July 28, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern time through eBRAP. Full applications are due November 12, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time through Grants.gov (extramural organizations) or eBRAP (intramural DOW organizations). Peer review is scheduled for January 2027 and programmatic review for March 2027, with awards expected by September 30, 2027.

The opportunity is funded under the Military Medical Research and Development program (CFDA 12.420).
