About this opportunity

The Defense Health Agency's Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) seeks innovative, high-risk, high-gain research proposals exploring groundbreaking concepts in tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) through the Exploration-Hypothesis Development Award mechanism. The funding opportunity supports basic and translational biomedical research addressing at least one of five focus areas: TSC-associated neuropsychiatric disorders, prevention and eradication of TSC-related tumors and cysts, prevention and treatment of TSC-related epilepsy, emerging diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, or maternal-fetal and reproductive health in women with TSC or lymphangioleiomyomatosis. Eligible applicants include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of Army organizations, both domestic and foreign, for-profit and nonprofit entities, with independent investigators and postdoctoral fellows permitted to serve as Principal Investigators. Applications will be evaluated through a two-tier review process emphasizing innovation as the most important criterion, followed by impact and research strategy/feasibility, with unscored criteria including research sharing plans, personnel qualifications, budget appropriateness, and environment. The pre-application (Letter of Intent) deadline is July 23, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and the full application deadline is August 6, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time, with peer review scheduled for November 2026 and programmatic review for February 2027.

Approximately $2.1 million in FY26 appropriated funds will support an anticipated six awards with a total cost cap of $350,000 per award and a maximum performance period of two years. Awards will be made no later than September 30, 2027, with FY26 funds expiring September 30, 2032. Research will be conducted at eligible organizations domestically and internationally, including universities, research institutions, hospitals, and other nonprofit and for-profit entities. No preliminary data is required, and cost sharing is not required; however, applications must demonstrate the ability to achieve interpretable results and adhere to rigorous study design standards including STROBE, CONSORT, SPIRIT, and ARRIVE 2.0 guidelines, with clinical trials prohibited.
