About this opportunity

The Defense Health Agency, through the Department of the Army Medical Command, is soliciting grant applications for innovative, high-risk, high-gain research exploring novel concepts in multiple sclerosis research. Applicants must propose well-formulated, testable hypotheses addressing at least one of four focus areas: Central Nervous System Repair, Protection and Regenerative Potential in MS; Correlates of Disease Activity and Progression in MS; Biology and Measurement of MS Symptoms; or Mechanisms Contributing to MS Etiology, Prodrome, Onset and Disease Course. The program offers two investigator tracks—Established Investigator (independent investigators at all career levels) and New Investigator (within five years of faculty appointment with no more than $300,000 in previous MS research funding as PI)—each reviewed separately. Applications will be evaluated through a two-tier review process consisting of peer review assessing innovation, research strategy, feasibility, and impact, followed by programmatic review considering military relevance and portfolio composition. Pre-applications are due July 30, 2026, with full applications due August 13, 2026; clinical trials are not permitted, and preliminary data is not required for consideration.

Approximately $2.0 million in FY26 funding will support approximately eight awards, with a maximum award of $250,000 per project and a maximum performance period of two years. FY26 funds expire for use on September 30, 2032, with awards obligated no later than September 30, 2027. Eligible applicants include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, foreign and domestic entities, and for-profit and nonprofit organizations, with research conducted at eligible institutions domestically and internationally.

Synopsis

Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Multiple Sclerosis Research Program (MSRP) Exploration - Hypothesis Development Award (EHDA) supports the initial exploration of innovative, high-risk, high-gain, and potentially groundbreaking concepts in the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) research field. The studies supported by this award mechanism are expected to lay the groundwork for future avenues of scientific investigation. All applications must address at least one of the FY26 MSRP EHDA focus areas. The proposed research project should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale and study design. The presentation of preliminary and/or published data is not required.

Distinctive Features: This funding mechanism includes two options: Established Investigator and New Investigator. The New Investigator option supports applicants early in their faculty appointments.
