About this opportunity

The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Military Burn Research Program Technology/Therapeutic Development Award to fund translation of preclinical burn research findings into clinical products for austere operational environments, with a preapplication deadline of July 7, 2026 and a full application deadline of October 21, 2026.

Eligible applicants include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations—both foreign and domestic entities, for-profit and nonprofit—excluding Federally Funded Research and Development Centers. No cost share is required. The program expects to fund approximately three awards with total cost caps of $1.6 million for single-PI awards or $1.8 million for the new Mentorship Option, which pairs an experienced researcher with one to two junior researchers. The maximum period of performance is three years, with awards anticipated by September 30, 2027.

Products must be tangible (medical device, drug, or clinical practice guidelines) or knowledge supporting tangible product development, addressing one or more of four focus areas: cold injury prevention and treatment, acute burn care best practices, burn complication prevention and management, and interventions preventing chronic sequelae. Applicants must demonstrate proof-of-concept and achieve minimum Technology Readiness Level 4 at preapplication submission. Clinical trials and human subject enrollment are prohibited.

The application process is two-step: preapplication via eBRAP (due July 7, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. ET), followed by full application via Grants.gov for extramural organizations or eBRAP for intramural organizations (due October 21, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. ET). Invitations to submit full applications will be issued by August 26, 2026. Peer review is scheduled for January 2027 and programmatic review for March 2027. Direct costs must include mandatory travel funding for PI presentation at a DOW-sponsored meeting and for mentees to attend burn-relevant research meetings. The funding opportunity number is HT942526MBRPTTDA under CFDA 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development).

Synopsis

Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Military Burn Research Program (MBRP) Technology/Therapeutic Development Award (TTDA) is a burn-focused, product-driven award mechanism intended to provide support for the translation of promising preclinical findings into burn products for clinical application in an austere, resource-limited, distributed operational environment.

Distinctive Features: The technology or therapeutic product(s) to be developed must be product-oriented (e.g., medical device, drug, or clinical practice guidelines involving a therapeutic or technology). The product(s) to be developed may be tangible or knowledge supporting the development of a tangible product and must address one or more of the FY26 MBRP TTDA focus areas. Knowledge products are allowable, provided that the knowledge is applicable to a technology or therapeutic under development. (A "knowledge product" is a non-tangible, non-materiel product that results from research with the potential to improve individual or public health.)

· New for FY26: The FY26 MBRP TTDA offers a Mentorship Option at a higher funding level to support a synergistic relationship between an experienced researcher (Mentor) and one to two junior researchers (Mentees). The dual purpose of this award is to fund a primary research study addressing a critical gap in combat burn care while simultaneously fostering the development of the next generation of military burn research leaders.
