About this opportunity
The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Military Burn Research Program (MBRP) Discovery Award to fund innovative, untested, groundbreaking research in combat-relevant burn care with an application deadline of October 21, 2026.
Applicants are unrestricted; eligible entities include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, foreign and domestic entities, for-profit and nonprofit organizations, and public or private entities. Principal Investigators at all levels are eligible regardless of ethnicity, nationality, or citizenship status. Cost sharing is not required.
Approximately $400,000 will fund roughly two Discovery Award applications, with a total cost cap of $200,000 per award and a maximum period of performance of 2 years. Awards are anticipated by September 30, 2027. FY26 funds expire September 30, 2032.
Research must address at least one of four focus areas: cold injury prevention and treatment, acute burn care best practices, complications management (including fluid resuscitation, endotheliopathy, sepsis, inhalation injuries, fungal infections, and hypermetabolism), or early-phase interventions preventing chronic pain and related complications. Clinical trials are prohibited; however, noninterventional clinical research is allowed. Proposed projects may be exploratory, hypothesis-driven, or hypothesis-generating research, but must be novel and based on a strong scientific rationale and well-developed study design. The outcome should be generation of robust preliminary data supporting groundbreaking future research projects.
Applications undergo two-tier peer and programmatic review, with innovation as the most critical criterion. Direct cost restrictions include funding for one investigator to attend one scientific meeting in Year 2, but prohibit additional travel and tuition expenses.
A pre-application deadline of July 7, 2026 applies. The Assistance Listing number is 12.420.
