About this opportunity
The Department of the Army Medical Command is soliciting applications for the Melanoma Academy Scholar Award to support early-career independent investigators no more than seven years from initial faculty appointment, with a pre-application due September 22, 2026 and full application due October 14, 2026. The program expects to allocate approximately $1.54 million to fund approximately two awards with total cost caps of $770,000 per award over a maximum three-year performance period.
Eligible applicants include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, including foreign and domestic entities. Each Scholar must designate a Career Guide—an established melanoma researcher at the Associate Professor level or above with a strong funding and publication record in melanoma—who does not need to be at the same institution. The award mechanism focuses on both the Scholar's research and career potential in the melanoma field.
Applications must address at least one of three focus areas: Prevention and Interception (risk factors, detection technology, mechanisms of progression, and preclinical models); Rare Melanomas (addressing unmet needs across the cancer research spectrum); or Survivorship (psychological, social, and physical impacts). Preliminary data are not required.
Direct costs must include travel for required Melanoma Academy workshops and may support Career Guide funding (maximum $30,000 annually), multi-institutional collaborations, and scientific meeting travel. Direct costs cannot support graduate student tuition or clinical trial costs. Clinical trials are explicitly prohibited.
Applications must be submitted through eBRAP for pre-applications and either Grants.gov (extramural organizations) or eBRAP (intramural Department of War organizations) for full applications. Peer review occurs in December 2026 and programmatic review in March 2027, with awards to be made no later than September 30, 2027. Funds expire for use on September 30, 2032. The program is funded under CFDA 12.420, Military Medical Research and Development.
