About this opportunity

The Department of the Army Medical Command, through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs, is soliciting applications for the Melanoma Research Program Focused Program Award addressing rare melanomas, with a pre-application due July 13, 2026, and full applications due October 14, 2026. Applicants must be unrestricted; eligible entities include extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, foreign and domestic, for-profit and nonprofit entities.

The award mechanism requires a mandatory partnering structure: an Initiating Principal Investigator at or above Associate Professor level (10% minimum effort) and one to two Partnering PIs at Assistant Professor level or equivalent, each leading distinct but complementary research projects. A distinctive requirement mandates inclusion of at least one rare melanoma survivor or patient advocate as a project team member providing advice and consultation throughout planning, implementation, and results dissemination. Proposed programs must comprise two to three distinct but complementary research projects addressing an overarching question relevant to rare melanomas; clinical trials are allowed.

Approximately $5.6 million will support approximately two awards, each capped at $2.8 million total cost, with a maximum period of performance of four years. Awards will be made no later than September 30, 2027, using FY26 funds expiring September 30, 2032.

Only the Initiating PI submits a pre-application through the Electronic Biomedical Research Application Portal; following pre-application screening for military relevance and technical merit, all PIs must submit full applications. The program prioritizes research addressing prevention and interception, rare melanomas across genetic, histologic, tissue of origin, and clinical presentation variants, and survivorship. Applicants must demonstrate relevance to military health through use of Service Member or Veteran populations, military databases, or multidisciplinary collaborations involving academia, industry, Department of Defense, or Department of Veterans Affairs entities, and must address critical unmet needs in rare melanoma prevention, diagnosis, treatment, or quality of life.

Funding falls under CFDA 12.420, Military Medical Research and Development.
