About this opportunity
The Defense Health Agency, through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP), is soliciting high-risk/high-reward research proposals to advance lupus disease understanding, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and quality of life improvements for patients, including Service Members, Veterans, and their families. Eligible applicants include independent investigators (not postdoctoral or clinical fellows) affiliated with extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, as well as foreign and domestic for-profit and nonprofit entities. Research must address at least one of six designated focus areas, including disease heterogeneity and health disparities, biological mechanisms, end-organ pathobiology, quality of life improvements, genetic and epigenetic components, or innovative healthcare delivery models; clinical trials and painful animal research involving domestic cats or dogs are prohibited except for military or service animal studies. Evaluation occurs through a two-tier peer and programmatic review process assessing impact, research strategy and feasibility, personnel qualifications, and transition plans. The pre-application submission deadline is July 29, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, with full applications due August 19, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. ET through either Grants.gov (extramural organizations) or eBRAP (intramural DOW organizations), and peer review is anticipated in October 2026 with programmatic review in February 2027.
The program expects to distribute approximately $5 million across approximately five Impact Award applications, with a maximum of $1 million per award and a maximum performance period of four years. FY26 funds expire September 30, 2032, with all awards anticipated to be funded by September 30, 2027. Research may be conducted at eligible extramural and intramural organizations domestically and internationally, with emphasis on institutions demonstrating capacity to execute lupus-focused research initiatives. Cost sharing is not required, and an individual may serve as Principal Investigator on only one FY26 LRP Impact Award application.
Synopsis

Research must address at least one of the fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Lupus Research Program (LRP) Impact Award (IPA) focus areas. This funding mechanism does not allow clinical trials.
Distinctive Features: The FY26 LRP IPA encourages, but does not require, preliminary data.
An individual may be named as Principal Investigator (PI) on only one application per LRP award mechanism (Idea Award, IPA, Transformative Vision Development Award, Transformative Vision Award), for a maximum of four applications to the FY26 LRP.
