About this opportunity
The Defense Health Agency (through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs) seeks innovative, high-risk/high-reward research proposals addressing lupus through five designated focus areas: understanding disease heterogeneity, biological mechanisms, pathobiology of end-organ injury, quality of life improvements, and genetic/epigenetic interactions. Early-career investigators and independent researchers with terminal degrees are eligible to serve as Principal Investigators, though clinical trials are explicitly prohibited. The program employs a two-tier competitive review process, with the first tier assessing technical merit through peer review and the second tier conducting programmatic review based on innovation, impact, military relevance, and program alignment. Critical deadlines include a pre-application (Letter of Intent) submission by July 29, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. ET, full application submission by August 19, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. ET, peer review scheduled for October 2026, and programmatic review in February 2027.
Approximately $1.5 million in total funding will support approximately five awards, with individual award caps of $300,000 and a maximum two-year performance period. Preliminary data are permitted but not required, and applicants may serve as PI on only one application per funding mechanism with a maximum of four total applications to the FY26 Lupus Research Program. Research may be conducted at eligible extramural and intramural U.S. Department of War organizations, including domestic and foreign entities, for-profit and nonprofit organizations, and public or private institutions. Awards are anticipated to be obligated no later than September 30, 2027, with funds expiring for use on September 30, 2032.
