About this opportunity
The Defense Health Agency's Fiscal Year 2026 Lung Cancer Research Program (LCRP) Idea Development Award seeks to fund conceptually innovative, high-risk/high-reward research aimed at accelerating progress toward eradicating lung cancer deaths and suffering. The program targets independent investigators at extramural and intramural Department of War organizations, including both for-profit and nonprofit entities, to conduct basic and translational research addressing at least one of five designated areas of emphasis: Biology and Etiology, Prevention and Risk Reduction, Detection/Diagnosis/Surveillance, Treatment and Prognosis, and Health Outcomes and Survivorship. Applicants must submit preliminary data supporting feasibility of their research hypotheses, though such data need not derive from lung cancer studies, and must demonstrate relevance to military Service Members, Veterans, and their families. Applications will be evaluated through a two-tier peer and programmatic review process based on innovation, impact, research strategy and feasibility, and personnel qualifications. The program employs a two-step submission process with pre-applications due June 23, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. ET through eBRAP, followed by full application deadlines of September 2, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. ET through Grants.gov for extramural organizations or eBRAP for intramural entities.
The Defense Health Agency anticipates allocating approximately $6.4 million to fund approximately eight awards, with individual award caps of $800,000 and a maximum performance period of three years. A New Investigator category enables applicants within 10 years of their first faculty appointment to compete separately from established investigators. Research is excluded from clinical trials and mesothelioma studies. Performance of research will occur at eligible extramural and intramural organizations domestically and internationally, with peer review scheduled for October 2026, programmatic review in January 2027, and awards anticipated by September 30, 2027.
Synopsis
Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Lung Cancer Research Program (LCRP) Idea Development Award (IDA) supports conceptually innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that could lead to critical discoveries or major advancements that will accelerate progress toward eradicating deaths and suffering from lung cancer. This mechanism promotes new ideas that are in the early stages of development and have the potential to yield impactful data and new avenues of investigation. Research must address at least one of the FY26 LCRP areas of emphasis.
Distinctive Features: This FY26 LCRP IDA mechanism has a New Investigator category that is designed to allow applicants early in their faculty appointments to compete for funding separately from established investigators. Preliminary data to support the feasibility of the research hypotheses and research approaches are required; however, these data do not necessarily need to be derived from studies of lung cancer.
