About this opportunity

The Department of the Army Medical Command, through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs, seeks applicants for the Arthritis Translational Research Award with a full application due October 22, 2026. Eligible applicants include U.S. Department of War extramural and intramural organizations, foreign and domestic organizations, and for-profit and nonprofit entities; applicants are unrestricted by organizational type. An investigator may serve as Principal Investigator on no more than two FY26 Arthritis Research Program applications combined across both award mechanisms.

The CDMRP expects to allot approximately $1.6 million to fund roughly two applications at $800,000 per award maximum, with a 3-year performance period. Awards will be made no later than September 30, 2027, using FY26 funds expiring September 30, 2032.

This mechanism funds preclinical or animal research only; clinical research, clinical trials, and basic research are prohibited. Research must address hypothesis-driven, high-impact translational research relevant to Service Members, Veterans, their families, and the American public. Applicants must select one of two focus areas: Prevention and Early Diagnosis, or Treatment and Mitigation of Disease Progression/Burden, and specify a primary arthritis type. Preliminary and/or published data are required. Direct costs cannot fund travel to scientific or technical meetings beyond one per year for one investigator.

The two-step application process requires a pre-application through eBRAP by July 22, 2026 (5:00 p.m. ET), followed by a full application by October 22, 2026 (11:59 p.m. ET). Extramural organizations submit full applications through Grants.gov; intramural Department of War organizations submit through eBRAP. Applications undergo peer review in December 2026 and programmatic review in February 2027.

The program operates under CFDA 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development).

Synopsis

Summary: The fiscal year 2026 (FY26) Arthritis Research Program (ATRP) Translational Research Award (TRA) supports high-impact translational research that will accelerate critical findings into clinically relevant solutions. Research funded under this award mechanism will be hypothesis-driven, high-impact applied research that is relevant to Service Members, Veterans, their Families and the American public. Research addressing any and all types of arthritis is encouraged.

Distinctive Features: The FY26 ATRP TRA mechanism is intended to support preclinical or animal research and may not be used for clinical research or clinical trials. Basic research, as defined in Section 3.1.2, is not allowed. A key aspect of this award mechanism is impact. The application should explicitly state how outcomes of the proposed research will significantly advance arthritis research, particularly in accelerating critical findings into clinically relevant solutions.

Preliminary and/or published data, originating from research conducted by the applicant(s) or others, is required.
