About this opportunity

The Department of the Army Medical Command through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs is soliciting applications for the Alzheimer's Transforming Research Award, with a full application due date of September 24, 2026 and a pre-application due date of June 22, 2026.

Applicants must be U.S. Department of War extramural or intramural organizations, including foreign and domestic entities and for-profit and nonprofit organizations. Independent investigators as PIs must have at least three years of postdoctoral research experience. Preliminary data are required, and community collaboration is mandatory for research prospectively enrolling human subjects.

The program expects to allot approximately $4.0 million to fund roughly four awards. Single PI applications have a total cost cap of $1.0 million per award; the Career Initiation or Transition Partnership Option also carries a $1.0 million combined cap for multiple PIs, with each PI named on separate awards to recipient organization(s). The maximum performance period is three years, with awards anticipated by September 30, 2027.

Applications must address at least one of two focus areas: Risk Factor Knowledge (advancing understanding, identification, and validation of risk and protective factors for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias) or Risk Reduction Solutions (describing methods, technologies, and strategies that reduce risk and prevent AD/ADRD). Clinical research is allowed; clinical trials and animal research are prohibited.

Peer review evaluates applications on impact, research strategy and feasibility, recruitment/accrual/retention, ethical considerations, statistical planning, post-award progression plan, research team qualifications, budget appropriateness, environment, research sharing plan, and application presentation. Extramural organizations submit full applications through Grants.gov; intramural DOW organizations submit through eBRAP. The assistance listing is CFDA 12.420 (Military Medical Research and Development).
