About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health Common Fund, National Institute on Aging, and National Cancer Institute are soliciting cooperative agreement applications for the Cellular Senescence Network (SenNet) Technology Projects (SenTecs) program, with applications due November 23, 2026. This is a five-year, milestone-driven funding opportunity structured in two phases: a two-year UG3 phase focused on technology development and feasibility demonstration, followed by a three-year UH3 phase emphasizing optimization, refinement, and validation. Clinical trials are not permitted under this mechanism.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), for-profit organizations, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and non-federally recognized), Indian housing authorities, special district governments, independent school districts, faith-based and community-based organizations, regional organizations, foreign institutions, U.S. territories, and eligible federal agencies.
The NIH intends to commit $5.4 million in total costs in FY2027 to fund up to nine awards. Maximum direct costs are $400,000 annually during UG3 and $550,000 annually during UH3. No cost share is required. Transition from UG3 to UH3 phases is not automatic and requires administrative review of milestones achieved at the close of Year 2.
The program seeks development or adaptation of innovative tools and technologies for identifying, characterizing, and understanding senescent cell heterogeneity in human tissues. Applications must include detailed plans for both UG3 and UH3 phases submitted simultaneously, intellectual property strategies, milestones with quantitative success criteria, and data management and sharing plans. As cooperative agreements, funded projects become members of the SenNet consortium and must participate in consortium governance, data sharing, and collaborative demonstration projects involving approximately 10 percent of the Year 5 budget. The earliest start date is March 2027.
CFDA 93.310 (Trans-NIH Research Support).
Synopsis
The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to solicit the development of innovative senescence technologies (SenTecs), or the adaptation of existing technologies focused on identification, characterization and understanding the biological consequences of senescent cell (SnC) heterogeneity in the context of the tissue environments and secretomes to facilitate novel strategies for modulating SnCs in vivo and for predicting the outcomes of targeting SnCs in human aging and in disease conditions. These are five-year, milestone-driven awards consisting of two phases. The first two years constitute the UG3 phase and are focused on SenTec development and demonstration of technology feasibility. The following 3-years is the SenTec application UH3 phase where SenTecs continue to be optimized, refined and validated. In the final year of the UH3 award, SenTecs will undertake a demonstration project conducted in a collaborative effort within SenNet to provide further validation of the proposed SenTec. Applicants are required to submit both UG3 and UH3 projects together when responding to this NOFO. Transition from the UG3 to UH3 phases is not automatic and will occur only after administrative review of each SenTec at the close of Year 2 of the award.
