About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health seeks applications for Bioengineering Partnerships with Industry (U01 Clinical Trial Optional) by September 7, 2027, supporting multidisciplinary research partnerships between academic and industrial investigators to develop and validate bioengineering tools and technologies addressing unmet biomedical problems.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), small businesses, 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, state and local governments, tribal governments and organizations, independent school districts, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander serving institutions, tribally controlled colleges and universities, faith-based and community-based organizations, for-profit organizations, and non-domestic entities. Federal agencies and U.S. territorial organizations are also eligible.
Awards are structured as cooperative agreements. The program prioritizes technological innovations positioned to deliver meaningful solutions within 5–10 years, with emphasis on establishing tools and technologies as robust, well-characterized solutions that enhance understanding of life science processes or medical practice.
The announcement operates through five parent grant programs: Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Research (93.394), Cancer Treatment Research (93.395), Discovery and Applied Research for Technological Innovations to Improve Human Health (93.286), Aging Research (93.866), and Vision Research (93.867). No award ceiling, floor, or expected number of awards are specified in the source.
Evaluation criteria include scientific merit and significance, technical adequacy of experimental design and approach, investigator competency, adequacy of facilities and resources, budget necessity, and relevance to announced program objectives. Applications undergo peer review followed by secondary review by relevant NIH national advisory councils.
