About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for innovative analysis of existing social science, behavioral, administrative, and neuroimaging data on substance use behaviors and related disorders, with an application due date of December 3, 2027. Clinical trials are not allowed under this R01 grant mechanism.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), tribal organizations and governments, state and county governments, city and township governments, special districts, public housing authorities, independent school districts, for-profit organizations, 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, small businesses, small business concerns partnering with research institutions, historically Black colleges and universities, Hispanic-serving institutions, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander serving institutions, tribally controlled colleges and universities, faith-based and community-based organizations, eligible federal agencies, regional organizations, non-domestic entities, and U.S. territories and possessions.

The opportunity emphasizes analysis of public-use and existing community-based or clinical datasets to study etiology, epidemiology, and trajectories of drug using behaviors (defined as alcohol, tobacco, prescription and other drug use), related disorders including morbidity and mortality, prevention of drug use and HIV, health service utilization, risk and resilience in psychopathology development, and strategies for developing and implementing prevention and treatment services for substance use and HIV. Research must use extant data rather than conduct new primary data collection.

This RFA is assigned to two Assistance Listing programs: Alcohol Research Programs (93.273) and Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (93.279). Applications will be evaluated on scientific and technical merit, program relevance, and alignment with NIH priorities. Applicants must follow FORMS-I research-specific application instructions and general guidelines for NIH grant submissions.
