About this forecast

The Food and Drug Administration is forecasting a new requirement to procure Illumina MiSeq i100Plus sequencing systems, which are desktop genomic sequencing instruments designed to support in-silico design and development of FDA sequencing applications for foodborne pathogen detection, including bacteria such as Salmonella spp., Listeria monocytogenes, and STEC, as well as viruses and parasites. The systems will enable FDA scientists to develop and optimize next-generation sequencing laboratory protocols and compare new applications such as Targeted Amplicon Sequencing with other genomic methods including whole genome and metagenome sequencing. The solicitation is estimated to release on February 1, 2026, with an anticipated award date of April 1, 2026.

The estimated award value ranges from $25,000 to $250,000, with the procurement covering three instruments—one for MOD1 (DFES), one for CPK1 (DFSG), and one for Moffett (DFPST, unfunded). This contract falls under NAICS code 423490 for Professional Equipment and Supplies Merchant Wholesalers. For additional information and inquiries regarding this opportunity, interested vendors should contact the FDA's acquisition liaison at hfpacquisitions@fda.hhs.gov or the primary contact mailbox at tbd@fda.hhs.gov.

PA #2 6/16 approved

The purpose of the request is to purchase a new model desktop genomic sequencing system from Illumina that has better technology and build, higher throughput, greater efficiency and accuracy, and less cost per genome compared to the older models. The new model of sequencing instrument shall assist the OAMT scientists on the in-silico design and development of all FDA sequencing applications for foodborne pathogens (bacteria such as Salmonella spp., Listeria monocytogenes and STEC, and viruses and parasites). We will also utilize the instrument to develop and optimize next generation sequencing laboratory protocols and to compare new applications (such as Targeted Amplicon Sequencing) with other genomic methods like whole genome and metagenome sequencing. One instrument for MOD1 (DFES) & one instrument for CPK1 (DFSG) & one instrument for Moffett (DFPST - unfunded)
