About this opportunity
The U.S. Geological Survey is conducting market research to identify qualified sources capable of performing specialized laboratory services for detrital zircon provenance samples and fine-grained volcanic tephra analysis. The services required include U-Th-Pb age analysis and Lu-Hf analysis for detrital samples, mineral separation, backscattered electron (BSE) and cathodoluminescence (CL) imaging, and analysis of zircon ages and isotopic ratios. Vendors must possess specialized facilities, instrumentation, and expertise to perform high-throughput, high-N analysis with Lu-Hf isotope measurements conducted simultaneously in split-stream mode using connected Neoma and Elemt2 or Neptune and iCAP analytical equipment. Additionally, contractors must have developed methods for extracting zircons from fine-grained samples down to 10 microns, an extremely small crystal size necessary for volcanic tephra age analysis. Interested parties must submit their company information, contact details, and detailed descriptions of relevant experience and capabilities by August 18, 2025.
This pre-solicitation notice does not specify any set-aside designations, indicating it will likely be open to all qualified vendors regardless of business size or socioeconomic status. No incumbent contractors or current service providers are identified in the announcement. While no specific contract value or budget range is provided, the notice falls under NAICS code 541380 for Testing Laboratories with a size standard of $19.5 million, suggesting this could be a substantial procurement. The opportunity involves analyzing detrital samples from the Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Centers, though specific quantities of samples or performance timelines are not detailed in this market research phase. The government emphasizes this is solely for planning purposes and they are not committed to awarding any contract based on responses to this sources sought notice.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is conducting market research to identify qualified sources with the capabilities to perform specialized laboratory services in support of the Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics (GMEG) Science Centers analytical needs. The Center has detrital zircon provenance samples and fine-grained volcanic tephra that require U-Th-Pb age analysis and Lu-Hf analysis for detrital samples. The required work includes mineral separation, backscattered electron (BSE) and cathodoluminescence (CL) imaging, and analysis of zircon ages and isotopic ratios. The Government is seeking capable sources with the specialized facilities, instrumentation, and expertise to perform these analyses, including high-throughput, high-N analysis that allows for Lu-Hf isotope measurements to be conducted simultaneously in split-stream mode by connecting to the Neoma and Elemt2 or the Neptune and iCAP analytical equipment. Vendors must also have developed methods for extracting zircons from fine-grained samples down to 10 microns an incredibly small crystal size likely required for age analysis of sampled volcanic tephra.
This sources sought announcement is not a request for quote or proposal and the Government is not committed to award of a purchase order or contract pursuant to this announcement. The information resulting from this market research is simply for planning purposes to assist the Government in determining its acquisition strategy. The Government will not pay for any costs incurred in the preparation of information for responding to this notice.
