About this opportunity

The U.S. Geological Survey's Office of Acquisitions and Grants has issued a Special Notice seeking qualified laboratory services providers for specialized geological analysis work supporting the Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Centers. The notice, posted on August 13, 2025, requests market research information from companies capable of performing U-Th-Pb age analysis and Lu-Hf analysis on detrital zircon provenance samples and fine-grained volcanic tephra. The required services include mineral separation, backscattered electron and cathodoluminescence imaging, and analysis of zircon ages and isotopic ratios. This opportunity falls under NAICS code 541380 for Testing Laboratories with a size standard of $19.5 million. The government emphasizes this is strictly a market research effort and not a solicitation for quotes or proposals.

The primary objective of this market research is to identify sources with specialized facilities, instrumentation, and expertise to conduct high-throughput, high-N analysis using advanced equipment such as Neoma and Elemt2 or Neptune and iCAP systems for simultaneous Lu-Hf isotope measurements in split-stream mode. Interested companies must respond by August 18, 2025, via email with company information including DUNS/UEI number, contact details, and detailed descriptions of relevant experience and capabilities. Contractors must demonstrate expertise in extracting zircons from fine-grained samples down to 10 microns, an extremely small crystal size necessary for analyzing volcanic tephra samples. The government has made clear that no costs will be reimbursed for preparation of responses to this market research notice. Eligible participants must have the technical capabilities to perform the complex analytical procedures described and possess the specialized equipment required for this advanced geological analysis work.

Notice text

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is conducting market research to identify qualified sources with the capabilities to perform specialized laboratory services in support of the Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics (GMEG) Science Centers analytical needs. The Center has detrital zircon provenance samples and fine-grained volcanic tephra that require U-Th-Pb age analysis and Lu-Hf analysis for detrital samples. The required work includes mineral separation, backscattered electron (BSE) and cathodoluminescence (CL) imaging, and analysis of zircon ages and isotopic ratios. The Government is seeking capable sources with the specialized facilities, instrumentation, and expertise to perform these analyses, including high-throughput, high-N analysis that allows for Lu-Hf isotope measurements to be conducted simultaneously in split-stream mode by connecting to the Neoma and Elemt2 or the Neptune and iCAP analytical equipment. Vendors must also have developed methods for extracting zircons from fine-grained samples down to 10 microns an incredibly small crystal size likely required for age analysis of sampled volcanic tephra.

This sources sought announcement is not a request for quote or proposal and the Government is not committed to award of a purchase order or contract pursuant to this announcement. The information resulting from this market research is simply for planning purposes to assist the Government in determining its acquisition strategy. The Government will not pay for any costs incurred in the preparation of information for responding to this notice.
