About this opportunity
The Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), a defense agency within the Department of the Navy, has issued a Special Notice regarding the development of draft military performance specifications for fiber optic connectors. The notice specifically addresses five different draft specification documents related to circular fiber optic connectors with various design configurations and mounting styles. These specifications cover multiple connector types, including receptacle and plug styles with removable termini, screw threads, and environment-resistant features. The draft specifications are designed to accommodate a variety of design solutions and encourage a broad vendor base for manufacturing these specialized interconnect components. The specifications are part of the MIL-PRF-28876 series and include amendments to existing standards.
Contractors interested in these draft specifications can request copies by emailing CommandStandards@navy.mil with the specific document number in the subject line. The review period for these draft documents extends until January 20, 2025, providing ample time for industry stakeholders to examine and provide feedback. While this is not a solicitation for contracts, it represents an opportunity for manufacturers in the Electronic Connector Manufacturing sector (NAICS 334417) to understand upcoming military standards for fiber optic interconnectors. The final documents will be available for review on the ASSIST Online platform at https://quicksearch.dla.mil/ once completed. The specifications cover connectors with various technical characteristics, including different backshell angles (45 and 90 degrees), mounting styles (wall and jamnut), and environment-resistant properties, which suggests a comprehensive approach to standardizing fiber optic connector design for naval and potentially broader military applications.
