About this opportunity
NASA's National Aeronautics and Space Administration Shared Services Center (NASA/NSSC) has published a Special Notice for Animal Husbandry and Behavioral Testing Services to support a NASA Human Research Program. The notice, posted on February 5, 2026, and modified on February 9, 2026, indicates the agency's intent to award a sole source contract to the University of Kansas Medical Center under the authority of FAR 13.106-1(b)(1)(i). Performance of the work will be conducted at NASA/Ames Research Center (ARC). The procurement falls under NAICS Code 541715 (Research and Development in the Physical, Engineering, and Life Sciences). This Special Notice invites interested organizations to demonstrate capabilities that might warrant competitive bidding rather than sole source procurement.
The primary objective is to procure comprehensive animal husbandry and behavioral testing services for approximately 176 mice (109 cages) that have undergone simulated spaceflight conditions, with services required from February 10 through May 31, 2026. Contractors must provide animal housing, husbandry services, veterinary care, and administration of seven behavioral tests including SHIRPA phenotype assessment, sociability and social memory, force plate actimetry, grip strength, balance beam, elevated zero maze, and Barnes maze evaluations. The total contract value is approximately $47,790.50, with funding divided into two installments for behavioral testing and animal housing costs. The deadline for submitting written capabilities and qualifications is 4:00 p.m. Central Standard Time on February 10, 2026, directed to Procurement Specialist Laura Quave at laura.a.quave@nasa.gov. Only written submissions are acceptable; the government retains sole discretion to determine whether to conduct this procurement competitively based on responses received.
