Park / Park Unit:

Weir Farm National Historical Park

Order#:
TBD
Prepared By:
Karen Fix
Date:
12/10/2021

1.0 PROJECT DESCRIPTION / SUMMARY:

This project will hire a professional conservator to conduct a delated condition assessment survey of chairs in the park’s collection. The resulting report must include treatment recommendations, priorities for treatment, associated hours estimated for each treatment, and images of each item.

2.0 OBJECTIVES:

2.1 The Historic Architecture, Conservation and Engineering Center (HACE) will hire a contract conservator to treat items as identified.

2.2 Contractor shall provide treatment proposals, treatment reports and surveys as needed by the government.

2.3 Contractor shall provide advice to the client on conservation issues (e.g., storage and exhibit questions, object condition observations, etc.) and participate in meetings as needed.

2.4 Contractor shall record and maintain records of treatments and surveys in conjunction with NPS guidelines/ protocols.

3.0 BACKGROUND:

Weir Farm is the location of J. Alden Weir’s home and art studio. Some of these chairs to be examined were used to position models and family members for portraits and can be seen in Weir’s paintings. Others were used by the Weir, Young and Andrews families in the various rooms of the Weir House, the Weir Studio or the Young Studio.

These historic, original chairs have never been professionally assessed and suffer from a variety of levels of deterioration. Because of their poor condition, many of these original chairs were overlooked for the park’s Furnishing Plan. Evaluation by an experienced furniture conservator is required for the park to provide the best preventative conservation of these irreplaceable historic pieces original to the Weir family and used by other artists. Current work to complete installation of a passive ventilation system in the Weir House will control humidity and temperature. Correlating the survey with this new approach to control the interior environment will ensure that more historic furnishings can be on view to the public.
