Q&A SITE VISIT
Kentucky Lock - Lock Grating Modifications
Questions:
1. What is the expected Start date for this project?
Answer: Upon notice of Award and Notice to Proceed.
2. What about the existing damaged grating? Will the contractor be required to repair the damaged ones?
Answer: Yes – Contractor should repair damaged grating panels.
3. What is the weight of the 1‐1/2" grating per square foot?
Answer: Approximately 15 psf.
4. What is the weight of the 4‐1/2” reinforcement grating per square foot?
Answer: Approximately 55 psf.
5. How many grates or areas of grates will be allowed to be removed at a time?
Answer: One area (corner) shall be permitted to be removed at a time.
6. Is there a site plan for these areas for take‐off purposes of temporary hand rail installation?
Answer: Yes. (6) For Information Only drawings are provided.
7. Many of the grates have I‐Beam supports below the understood preferred areas for I‐Bolt installation. The design shown will have the I‐Bolt and support plate protrude below the grating and will cause the grates to rest with the I‐Bolt/Plate on the support beam and will not sit level. Please clarify the intended locations of the new I‐Bolts or revise the design to allow the bolt and plate to be flush with the bottom of the grate.
Answer: Contractor shall ensure lifting points do not interfere with grating supports. If interference will occur at location indicated on plans, Contractor shall propose new location for approval by government.
8. After review of several of the diamond plate covered grating sections, it is understood that these sections are filled with cement. Is it still your intention to use the current design for these sections?
Answer: The grating panels with grout infill are not to be modified.
9. Can scaffolding be used for temporary barricades?
W912P5-16-B-0014
Answer: All guardrail shall be in compliance with current EM‐385. Please refer to reference EM‐385‐1‐1.
21.F.01 Standard Guardrail Systems.
10. Also we would like to know what kind of coating is presently on the 1‐1/2" Grating and the 4‐1/2" reinforcement grating (paint? galvanize? etc.)
Answer: The grating panels have an existing hot dip galvanized coating.
11. Are we doing each side of the lock in stages (2 total, land + river) or each section in stages (3 total, upper land + upper land + upper river)?
Answer: One area (corner) shall be permitted to be removed at a time.
12. To hot dip the parts, they need to be stripped and recoated. The largest sections will have to be dipped in stages as many galvanizers do not have tubs large enough to dip them once. Dipping in stages can potentially distort products, which the vendor would not be liable for. Is there an alternative coating that can be used or do we need to go to the necessary lengths to get them hot dipped?
Answer: All grating panels shall be hot dip galvanized after fabrication/repairs.
13. Would it be acceptable to build new grates? This may shorten lead time and avoid potential recoating issues.
Answer: New grating panels are permitted if Government incurs no additional cost.
14. Note 7 of the drawing says the existing lift points are acceptable for the 4 point grates. The spec recommends 12” from the edges. If the I‐beam is in the way, should the lift points be moved closer to the inside of the grate?
Answer: Contractor shall ensure lifting points do not interfere with grating supports. If interference will occur at location indicated on plans, Contractor shall propose new location for approval by government.
15. Does every section need eyebolts or just places to put eyebolts?
Answer: The contractor shall supply 12 each, 1” Crosby G‐277 shouldered eye bolts or approved equal.
16. On the drawing, there is a single asterisk note in the grating schedule that refers to the aluminum plated grates. We discovered that those were filled with concrete at the site. How will these be handled in the scope of this project?
Answer: The grating panels with grout infill are not to be modified.
