BACKGROUND AND LOCATION

The 175th Wing (175 WG) of the Warfield Air National Guard Base (ANGB) is on the northeastern portion of Martin State Airport in Baltimore, Maryland. Two (2) former potable groundwater drinking wells will be abandoned according to the “Maryland Draft 2013 Proposed Well Construction Regulations, .34 Well Abandonment and Sealing Standards”. The former drinking water wells were installed on base in the late 1960s and no identification tags or construction diagrams are available. The wells are 6-inch in diameter, constructed with 6-inch steel surface casing, and were measured to be approximately 120 feet deep. The depth of the surface casing in the boreholes below the ground surface is unknown. The wells have been permanently disconnected from any water supply system. A submersible pump and down-hole piping are in place in both the wells and must be removed and disposed. The two (2) former wells have steel stick up casing with bollards and guard rails that must be removed. All ground surface grades must be restored with clean fill and the vegetation restored. The wells are located in a maintained grass field with good access. The driller must supply the names and identification information for all site workers prior to the site work to arrange for site access. Work will be conducted in normal business hours during the week. Prior to conducting any fieldwork, the contractor shall meet with the 175th Wing EM to review the scope of work and ensure that all proper permits (i.e., airport dig permits, utility locates, security clearances, etc.) have been obtained to complete the well abandonment activities. The wells are accessible by vehicle and lye with in the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area.
