About this file
This document outlines requirements for a Zorn LWD Asphalt Tester Device to be procured by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Airfields and Pavements Branch currently relies on falling weight deflectometers for airfield pavement evaluation but requires a more portable solution for contingency environments. The Zorn AT 2.0 device meets this need as a lightweight deflectometer that assesses asphalt layer deformation resistance through a 15kg drop weight and integrated temperature sensor. Requirements specify the drop weight impact force, pulse time, and stamp sizes. The device must include a portable data acquisition system, transport case, temperature-resistant wheels, and acceleration sensor for deflection measurements. It will be shipped to the Corps of Engineers in Vicksburg, Mississippi. A related federal contract opportunity from the Corps of Engineers solicits proposals for the Zorn LWD Asphalt Tester Device.

Description of Requirement
Zorn AT 2.0 Device
Purpose and Scope
Currently, the Airfields and Pavements Branch (APB) team relies on performing the falling weight deflectometer (FWD) as a nondestructive testing method for airfield pavement evaluation. While the FWD is a very robust piece of equipment that has been widely used for decades, access to this evaluation tool is limited in contingency environments. Nonetheless, contingency mission planners require information regarding the pavement structural condition to properly strategize aircraft operations. Therefore, the APB has been investigating pavement evaluation tools, specifically field asphalt tester devices, that can be readily implemented to assess the structural condition of airfield pavements. As such, the ZORN instruments have developed a modified lightweight deflectometer (LWD) that simulates the moving traffic and allows the deformation resistance of the asphalt layers to be assessed. The modified LWD is called “Zorn AT 2.0.” The Zorn AT 2.0 has been identified as a potential portable and practical pavement evaluation tool for asphalt concrete layer characterization. The Zorn AT 2.0 device generates a dynamic modulus parameter that can potentially relate to the laboratory data that is traditionally collected during the design process of asphalt concrete.
Requirement
The Zorn AT 2.0 device uses a 15 kg drop weight with a 50 mm stamp plate for testing freshly paved and existing asphalt pavements with temperatures greater or equal to 60 ˚C. The Zorn AT 2.0 Device also includes integrated temperature data collection into the electronics box at the time of the test.
The LWD AT Device shall meet the following requirements.
1. Drop weight – 15 kg.
2. Impact Force – 9.42 kN
3. Pulse Time – 17 ms
4. Stamp Size – 50 mm (additional 20 mm and 30 mm)
The LWD AT Device shall include the following features:
1. Portable data acquisition system for wireless device control
2. Transport Case
3. Two integrated, temperature-resistant wheels
4. 15 kg drop weight
5. Test plunger
6. Temperature sensor
7. MEMS acceleration sensor for precise deflection measurements
8. Expandable with asphalt modulus measurement kit
LWD AT Device shall be shipped to:
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers 3909 Halls Ferry Road Vicksburg, MS 39180
