DESCRIPTION OF REQUIREMENTS (DOR)
Automatic Asphalt Binder Extraction Unit
Purpose and Scope The Airfields and Pavements Branch (APB) of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Vicksburg, MS, frequently performs laboratory testing and analysis of asphalt binders to characterize their engineering properties. During normal research activities or during forensic investigations, it is often necessary to extract and recover asphalt binder from existing asphalt pavement mixtures. APB requires an automatic extraction system that is capable of completing the extraction process in a completely closed cycle for operator safety (eliminate exposure to toxic fumes and contact with harmful solvents). An automatic system is also needed in order to increase testing productivity. The automatic extraction system must be compatible with standard non-flammable solvents and should meet requirements of ASTM D8159, “Standard Test Method for Automated Extraction of Asphalt Binder from Asphalt Mixtures.”
