1.8 MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT

The Contractor shall be responsible for the work of this section, without any direct compensation being made other than the payment received for contract line items on the bidding schedule.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 POLYURETHANE RESIN MATERIALS

The polyurethane resin shall be designed specifically for sealing cracks and joints in concrete structures. The polyurethane resin shall be a hydrophilic nonflammable, low viscosity, liquid activated by contact with water. Upon contact with water the material shall expand quickly and cure to a tough, flexible closed-cell polyurethane foam.

2.1.1 Physical Properties of Uncured Polyurethane Resin

Solids Content: 83-100% solids ASTM D 2369

Viscosity: 350-800 cps at 73 Degrees F ASTM D 2196

2.1.2 Physical Properties of Cured Polyurethane Resin

Tensile Strength: >150 PSI ASTM D 3574

Elongation: >250% ASTM D 3574

Shrinkage: <10% ASTM D 1042

Density: 12-35 pcf ASTM D 3574

Free Rise Expansion: 400-600%

2.2 EXPANSIVE ROPE MATERIALS

The expansive rope shall be Natural jute rope comprised of strands, having a twist of approximately 1-1/4 turns per foot. The loose twist is easily unraveled to allow for fitting into joints or annular spaces from 1/2" to 2". When combined with polyurethane resin and water, the system swells to seal cracks, joints, and annular spaces.

2.2.1 Physical Properties of Expansive Rope

Weight: .4 lbs. / ft at 2” dia.

Diameter: Approximately 2” (8 strands twisted)

Material: Jute

Confirms to: Federal Specification HH-P-117

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 PREPARATION FOR WATERSTOP INJECTION

Mark location for waterstop and secure approval from Contracting Officer for that location.

Drill four-inch diameter hole, centered on the expansion joint to elevation 664.0 as shown on drawings. The drill hole shall not vary from vertical by more than ½-inch for the depth of the hole. Holes may be drilled with either core drill or percussion rotary drill methods.

Flush the hole with clean water.

3.1.1 Drill Hole Verification

If core drilling is used, the cores shall be retained and checked to verify that the drilling has been done on the joint. If percussion drilling is used, a down-hole camera shall be used to verify the hole was on the joint.

3.1.2 Installation of Grout Sock or Expansive Rope

The Contractor shall complete the installation of grout sock or expansive rope in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions or as stated herein. The sock/rope and polyurethane resin shall cover the vertical core hole completely up to the depth of 6 inches from the top concrete surface.

The grout sock/expansive rope must have the ability to contain the polyurethane resin to prevent it from being washed out from flowing water.

3.2 APPLICATION

Inject the polyurethane resin. Begin injection at the bottom of the hole using equipment and methods, which deliver and thoroughly mix the resin with water at the point of delivery. Polyurethane resin shall be placed within 6 inches of the top concrete surface. When cured the polyurethane resin expands to form a tight compressive seal, properly adhering to the concrete surface.

3.2.1 Non-Shrink Grout

As shown on the drawings, the top 6 inches of the hole shall be cleaned and filled with a non-shrink grout meeting ASTM C 1107/C 1107M, Grade C.

3.2.2 Pre-Molded Expansion Joint Filler

A pre-molded expansion joint filler for the depth of the non-shrink grout shall meet the requirements of ASTM D 1752. The joint filler shall be recessed 1/4-inch down from the top and filled with a joint sealant meeting the requirements of ASTM C 920, Type S, Class 25 and use T.

3.3 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

All work will be performed within the guidelines set forth by EM 385-1-1

"Corps of Engineers Safety and Health Requirements Manual."

Each employee who works with the products must wear chemical goggles, face shields, NBR gloves, foul weather gear and boots.

A pressurized source of water, such as a garden type sprayer, must be provided at the work site. The water source should be used only for first aid in the event chemicals should contact an employee's skin.

A portable eye wash unit must also be provided near the work site for emergency use.
