About this file

This document is a specification section for stone restoration work on three columbarium courts at Arlington National Cemetery. The scope of work includes removal and replacement of damaged stone units, stabilization of loose panels, dutchman repairs, patching, crack repairs, staining, and miscellaneous repairs. New limestone and granite must match the color, texture, and graining of existing stone. Repair materials include replacement stone, dutchman pieces, repair mortars, epoxies, stains, and auxiliary items. The contractor must submit samples, qualifications, test reports, and a repair program. Mockups are required for each repair type. The specification provides requirements for surface preparation, installation of repairs, curing, field quality control, cleaning, and warranty work.

2. Notify COR prior to deviating from specified alignment.

3. Adjust anchors, supports, and accessories as necessary to position stone panel.

4. Adjust anchors, supports, and accessories as necessary to position stone panel.

a. Size shims to avoid overstressing stone.

b. Use single shim of required thickness where possible .

c. If shim stack is required, use shim thickness combination resulting in fewest shims. Adhere or pin together shim stacks.

d. Maximum thickness of shim stack: 1 inch or as indicated on shop drawings.

5. For mortar-joint installations:

a. Set stone panel in full bed of setting mortar.

b. Fill vertical joints with setting mortar and shush full.

c. Maintain vertical joints to receive sealant completely clear of mortar for full depth and height.

d. After mortar has achieved initial set, rake out mortar to depth of 3/4 inch and point joints in accordance with Section 04 01 27.

2. If steel is encountered in backup material, stop drilling immediately. Drill new hole maximum of 4 inches radially from first hole. Patch unused hole with repair mortar.

D. Remove dust and debris from hole by blowing oil-free compressed air into hole.

E. Install anchors in accordance with anchor manufacturer's recommendations. Countersink anchors 1/2 inch beyond surface of stone.

F. Mask face of stone and install repair mortar in hole over anchor in accordance with mortar manufacturer's instructions and recommendations. Wipe excess mortar off stone surface with clean, slightly moistened cloth, leaving grout flush with stone surface.

1. After 72 hours, lightly buff stone surface to remove excess material.

3.7 DUTCHMAN REPAIRS

A. At locations designated for dutchman repair on Drawings, cut out immediate area of spall, adjacent unsound stone, and, as necessary, sound stone to form rectangular removal area to a full depth of the stone. Remove existing repairs in their entirety.

B. Inspect exposed backup material and notify COR of visible distress or deterioration. Repair backup material as specified or as directed by

COR.

C. Fabricate dutchman to match color and pre-weathered texture of adjacent stone or approved mockup. Maintain the following tolerances

SECTION 04 01 40.91 Page 17 unless otherwise indicated on Drawings:

1. oints between dutchman and parent stone: 1/8 inch.

2. Joints at stone perimeter: Match edge of parent stone, +/- 1/8 inch.

D. Install dutchman as shown on Drawings.

1. Install at least two pins per dutchman repair unless indicated otherwise.

6. Notify COR if removal depth is 3 inches or more.

7. Provide prepared surfaces that are clean, sound, stable, and free of loose particles, dust, soil, debris, grease, oil, and other contaminants. Surfaces shall be clean but rough cut and tooled to assure optimum bonding of repair mortar.

8. Tap stone surfaces with acrylic hammer to verify that stone is solid and stable.

SECTION 04 01 40.91 Page 18

9. Install stainless-steel tap cons and wire as shown on Drawings.

a. For patching with Jahn, Catheredral Stone only use mechanical anchor and dowels that are stainless steel threaded rod ASTM F593 with a diameter as indicated on Contract Drawings, bent and cut to lengths required to achieve embedments shown on the Contract Drawings.

10. Wash stone surfaces with clean water while scrubbing with stiff-bristle brush.

C. Placing Repair Mortar:

1. Mix, place, and cure repair mortar in accordance with mortar manufacturer's recommendations.

2. Wet stone surfaces and maintain in saturated-surface dry condition.

3. Mix repair mortar in individual batch to match stone panel being patched. Combine one or more colors of repair mortar as needed to produce exact match.

4. Place repair mortar with trowel in lifts, with no waiting period or scratch coat necessary between lifts, to maximum total thickness of 3 inches.

a. Do not use bonding agent.

b. Use light pressure during placement.

c. Work mortar firmly into surface of stone, including corners and under and around mechanical anchors.

d. For patches thicker than 3 inches, apply repair mortar in two lifts.

1) Place first lift and allow to set.

2) Scrape off about 1/16 inch of mortar if cement skin has formed.

3) Dampen surface and place second lift.

5. Build up repair mortar slightly above adjacent stone surface.

Allow mortar to set slightly, typically 15 to 30 minutes depending on weather. Scrape off excess material using straight edge such as plasterer's miter rod. Do not press down or "float" patch.

6. Where patches occur at panel edges or corners, form repair mortar to match profile of adjacent stone.

7. Clean repair mortar from adjacent stone surfaces by rubbing with sponge and clean water, before mortar dries. Wipe several times to prevent staining or halo effect on stone.

8. Finish patch to blend in with adjacent stone.

a. Fine smooth profile: trowel mortar at time of initial set or polish mortar with fine carborundum paper when mortar is

SECTION 04 01 40.91 Page 19 sufficiently hard, about seven days after placement.

b. Simulation of rough stone finish.
