Government Owned Blaster Suit/Coveralls

Laundering Guidelines

Stain Removal:

Washing Guidelines should be follow for pre-washing, during and post washing garments. These guidelines would reduce cross contamination when storing, shipping and delivery of garments for laundering. Unserviceable garments should be separated during pickup to prevent re-issuance to the customer.

Pre-treat oily, greasy stains with products like “Shout®” or “Spray ‘N Wash®”. Separate light colors from dark colors as staining can occur. Do not overload the washer. Garments need room to move in the wash for proper cleaning and good wrinkle recovery.

Dry Cleaning; Either petroleum solvent or perchloroethylene can be used. In cases of heavy, oily soil, this may be the preferred approach. If garments are heavily soiled with oil or grease, dry cleaning is recommended because this is more effective in removing these type contaminants.

Wash Cycle: Stains may be treated with any of the commercial stain removal products (Example: Tide detergent or Dial soap) prior to washing. Wash in a Normal or Cotton cycle at any water temperature up to a maximum of 140ºF (60ºC). Hotter water temperatures may be required to remove oily soils. It is important to remove flammable soils as soon as possible as they can serve as fuel.

Detergents with chlorine bleach can weaken the fabric and accelerates color loss. Oxygen bleaches may be used if necessary. Oxygen bleach is found in some home laundry detergents such as Tide with Bleach®.

Wash Blast Suits/Coveralls separately, do NOT use chlorine bleach or liquid non-chlorine bleaches.

Washing Instructions for Blaster Suit/Coveralls:

Nylon/Cotton Blend materials should be hand washed with mild detergent and drip dried.

Cotton is a highly washable fabric but, because it's prone to shrinking, shouldn't be exposed to hot water or high-heat drying. Machine or hand wash using cold water, and air dry your fine cottons. Cotton is a highly known for shrinkage during laundering.

Nylon is also entirely machine washable. It is, however, likely to become quite staticky. Hanging nylon garments to air dry, however, will take care of that, since static tends to develop in the dryer.

Drying nylon is a quick process. if using a dryer it's recommended that nylon is put through a low temperature cycle, as it can be damaged if left in the dryer too long. Nylon also builds up static cling.

Wash Cycle Water & Temperature is to wash in soft water with less than 4.0 grains of hardness. Hard water contains mineral salts that can form insoluble deposits on the surface of fabrics that can negate the flame resistant characteristics or serve as fuel if garments are exposed to an ignition source. Use the Permanent Press cycle in water temperature up to 140°F. Use any typical home laundry detergent. Do not use “tallow soap” as it can leave a film on the fabric.

Laundry Cleaning Aids:

Aids such as Starch, fabric softeners, and other laundry additives can coat the fiber and mask the flame resistant performance. They may also serve as fuel in case of combustion. The use of laundry aids is NOT recommended.

Fame Resistant (FR):

FR Apparel should be washed using soft water (less than 4.0 grains). Hard water adversely affects cleaning, resulting in increased detergent usage. Hard water contains mineral salts that can form insoluble deposits on the surface of fabrics. Sufficient buildup can negate the flame resistant characteristics of the garment, and may serve as fuel if garments are exposed to an ignition source.

Natural Detergents: Do not use natural soaps (anionic or tallow soap). Soft water is recommended.

Hard water precipitates soaps and contains calcium and magnesium salts. These can build up on the fiber surfaces, coating the fabric and masking luminescent or FR properties.
