Design Considerations

This guide is intended to assist you in selecting or designing the specimen label formats used in your laboratory. provides standard label programs writtenCerner in Discern Explorer (CCL) programming language. You can use these programs as they exist, or customize them to accommodate your specific needs. Each label program is compatible with a specific label stock that can be purchased from Cerner by working with your Client Result Executive or Engagement Leader.

The selection of a label stock is dependent upon your bar-code label printer specifications.

You can use the Discern Layout Builder, available from Discern Visual Developer (DiscernVisualDeveloper.exe), to create customized label programs based on provided label templates as indicated below in the "Create Customized Label Programs Using Discern Layout Builder" section. Using the Discern Layout Builder allows for easy customization and also provides a visual presentation of the label as you customize the label programs.

Description of fields for this program shown below:

SCS_AUDIT

The SCS Audit label program can be used for troubleshooting purposes by associating it with a dummy label printer in Device Viewer (DeviceViewer.exe). When labels are printed to the dummy printer, a file is created in CCLUSERDIR with the label's data elements. The file name will be the name of the printer. For example, if the dummy label printer's output destination is named LPME, then the label file will be CCLUSERDIR:LPME.DAT.

Release Considerations The ability to add the container alias qualifiers (container_alias_cd and container_alias_disp) to a label program became available with the

.2010.01 Release Update

Include Label Program To utilize the Cerner standard label programs they first must be included in the Object Library. The source code (.prg) for the scripts and their respective includes (.inc) are available in CCLSOURCE. The source code is the file that needs to be included and can be completed in two ways. Both methods require group zero access.

Option one:

Open Discern Visual Developer.

Check that your user has a group by completing the following.

From the Reports menu select .customize Select .Add Report In the object name type "CCLUAF".

In the Description type "Report of Group 0 Users".

Click .Ok Select the report and click .Run Select "MINE" and click .Execute Confirm your username is in the list. If it is not, contact your system administrator to have your username set up as group 0 before proceeding.

From the File menu select .Open > Source In the Logical/Path: type "CCLSOURCE:".

Click .Browse Type "scs" and click Find Highlight the source code file (.prg) and click .OK Confirm read only box is not checked and Click on the Open Host Source Box.OK From the Build menu select .Include/Compile Confirm in the Output pane, the updated dialog indicates zero error(s).

Example "CCL compile with - 0 error(s), 1 warning(s), 0 informational".

Cycle CPM Script (51) servers on all nodes.

Option two:

Log-in the back-end command prompt for the domain.

Navigate to the CCLSOURCE directory and confirm the .prg file is in the directory. Note the file name, it will be needed for the following steps.

Type ‘CCL’ and press to access CCL.Enter The Secure log-in screen is not required for the steps but can be used. To do so, fill in the fields and press or to skip press .Enter Enter Your cursor will now be next to the line one ‘1)’. Before proceeding, confirm the sign-on used has group 00 access. This is seen on the screen a few rows up to the right represented by ‘Grp(00)’. If it says anything other than Grp(00) contact your System administrator to set you username up as a group zero.

At the CCL command line enter the following command and press :Enter

%i CCLSOURCE:[labelprogram.prg] go.

Example %i CCLSOURCE:scszb_cl0900_prd.prg go.

After receiving a message saying “Command executed!” type the following command and press .Enter Commit go.

Cycle CPM Script servers (51).

Repeat the above steps on each of the remaining nodes for the domain.

Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute(CLSI) Standard_Auto12A Label:

The following label scripts have been created in order to allow for a label to print according to the recommendations contained in the AUTO12-A standardsCLSI document. They were based on the existing label scripts for the CL0920 label stock due to the 2.0 x 1.0 inch dimension of the CL0920 label and that label stock is reflected in the script name.

Note This label script can be modified in the Discern Layout Builder.

AUTO-12A label scripts do not have any default data in the customized area of the label. If you want to add additional data fields to the available customization area of the label, the same can be done using the Discern Layout Builder. Please note that any modifications to the existing data would make the label non-compliant with the standards.

Standard Label Programs Troubleshooting

Can the standard programs be modified?

Each label format is defined using standard programs that are modifiable. Some clients chose to do their own label customization by modifyingDiscern Explorer these programs in their system. Any request for label modification by is regarded as custom work performed on a fee-for-service basis. Contact the Cerner

Client Care Center for custom label requests.Cerner

Can more than one program print to the same printer?

Yes, as long as the label programs use the same label stock. The same printer can have more than one output destination, and each output destination is associated with a label program. Multiple output destinations are displayed as separate selections within a list of printers, even though the labels are printed to the same physical printer.

Why is the container alias not displaying on the label?

The container alias is not printed on any standard label format. It is available to be added to any label program as seen in the Label Information section above. It will only be populated if the applications Document Protocol or Manage Samples are used to specify or default the containerMillennium Helix for Laboratory alias. It is generally intended for identifying sample containers in relation to their parent specimen containers.

Additional information about the container alias fields can be found:

.2010.01 Release Update

Creating Customized Label Programs using Discern Layout Builder

Release Considerations The ability to create customized label programs using Discern Layout Builder is available beginning with .the 2012.01 Release Update

The Layout Builder provides the ability to create a customized label program by working with a label template for a specific label stock. A visual representation of the label is provided while you modify the label template. Modification to the label defaults as wanted creates the necessary modification in the label script. The label data is presented in a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) fashion. However, note that differences between the layout display and what is printed may occur due to the properties supported by the label printer.

Once the label template is modified, you can save off the label program for assignment to an output destination.

Note Do not save the modifications to the label template itself. Use the Save As menu item to save the modified label program using a different name.

The following label stock labels are currently supported for user customization using the Discern Layout Builder, available from Discern Visual Developer (DiscernVisualDeveloper.exe):

CL0141 label stock CL0140 label stock CL0720 label stock CL0920 label stock when used with the AUTO12-A label scripts.

The Layout Builder allows for the following customization:

Select from a list of available label data fields for placement on a collection or specimen label Define placement of a data field on a label (either by drag and drop or defined position property) Define the height, width, and alignment of the container for the data field and see the data field container Define the font size of a data field on a label Add text, in addition to the static text for the data fields, to the label Add bar codes to the label Draw and add graphics to the label

Additionally, the Layout Builder provides for:

The ability to "save as" in order to create multiple customized label programs for different printer output destinations.

The ability to execute the label program from within the label layout in order to test the customization of the label program.

Note The Layout Builder supports only a static bar code and does not currently have the ability to dynamically determine the following based on the collection class:

Bar-code symbology SMG Bar-Code Adjust – used to fine-tune the positioning of the bar code on the collection label SMG Format-used to indicate whether the bar code is to be printed to the left or right of the procedure list on the 2 1/2-inch collection list and label.

It is possible to modify the label template to support multiple bar-code symbology if necesary. If required, see the "Applying Multiple Bar-Code Symobology Based On Collection Classes" topic below.

CL0720

The default label fields for CL0720 label templates are defined as follows:

Age_sex (in the form of "Age Sex") Bar-code_accession (honoring the preferences in Collection Classes for whether or not the container is included) Collection_class
