The Great War and Its Aftermath

America Joins the Fray Why did the United States nally join The Great War in Europe in 1917 after being neutral for the war’s rst two and one-half years? In January, the intercepted Zimmerman Telegram showed that Germany was proposing a military alliance with Mexico against the U.S., promising

Mexico would regain the American Southwest. Then, Germany resumed unrestricted submarine warfare—sinking without warning U.S. vessels carrying exports to Germany’s enemies—Britain and France. Three U.S.

ships were sunk in March with heavy loss of life. To President Woodrow

Wilson, these were symptoms of a larger threat to freedom if Germany’s autocratic and militaristic regime emerged victorious. On 6 April 1917

Congress passed the declaration of war that Wilson sought “to make the world safe for democracy.”

Camp Greene:

Birthplace of the Division Camp Greene, near the city of Charlotte, North Carolina, was one of thirty-two camps that hosted mobilization camps for the American war eort. Named to honor Revolutionary War

Gen. Nathanael Greene, it was built in fewer than ninety days and, at its peak, held more than 60,000 soldiers. On 21 Novmber

1917, the Third Division was activated there. The division was a hodge-podge of Regular Army and other units from military posts throughout the country. The soldiers lived in eight-man tents on raised wooden platforms. Mother Nature contributed to the task of toughening the soldiers by hammering Camp

Greene with sixteen snow and ice storms that winter. As the snow melted, it create incredibly muddy conditions that hampered training.

The Third Division Deploys The Third Division, minus Artillery and Engineers, began its deployment to France in spring, 1918. In late 1917 the 6th

Engineer Regiment had already gone to France, where it fell under the command of the British Fifth Army and participated in the

Somme Defensive Operation. On 13 March 1918, the Third Division

Headquarters and Advance Party began three weeks’ training at

Liverpool, England. The division arrived in France on 4 April, consolidated, and resumed training. On 30 May, except for the

Artillery and Engineers, the division received orders placing it at the disposal of the French Army of the North. Its commanding general placed the division under the XXXVIII Corps, French Sixth

Army, which in turn put it under the command of the French 38th

Army Corps operating near Château-Thierry.

Operation ENDURING FREEDOM:

The Modular Force in Afghanistan Late in 2009, 3d Combat Aviation Brigade became the rst brigade from the Third Infantry Division to deploy to Afghanistan. Soon, it assumed responsibility for aviation operations across three Regional Commands that supported U.S. conventional and special operations forces. It provided attack forces, reconnaissance and security, medical evacuation, personnel and cargo transport, downed aircraft recovery, and deliberate and hasty air assault capabilities in support of ground forces. Three years later, the brigade returned to Afghanistan to pro-vide aviation support in Zabul Province. It closed Forward Operating Base Wolverine—the largest one in Regional Command South—and supported 625 deliberate operations, 2000 MEDEVAC missions, and moved 4.9 million pounds of cargo and 15,000 personnel.

In late 2012, at Kandahar, the 3rd Sustainment Brigade provided sus-tainment support to Third and Fourth Infantry Divisions, 1st and 2nd Marine Expeditionary Forces, the International Security Assistance Forces operating in three Regional Commands, and provided direct support to 1st, 2d, and 3d Combat Aviation Brigades. It also was inte-gral to the closure and transfer of 61 forward operating bases while providing sustainment to the force.

Aisne Campaign: Château-Thierry When the Germans launched an assault on Château-Thierry, the French Army, low on reserves, turned to the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF). Ordered to assist on 30 May, only the 7th

Motorized Machine Gun Battalion was available because it had forty-eight half-ton Model T Ford trucks ready. Travelling 110 miles in thirty hours, the battalion arrived at the village and fell under the command of the French 10th Colonial Division. Two defensive positions in town and several defensive positions along the southern banks of the Marne River were hastily constructed. The

German night advance into the city, aided by cover from bombardment and smoke, met sti resistance. The division arrived on 3 June and, the next day, the Germans ended their assault after sustaining high casualties. The greatest threat to Paris since 1914 was turned back.

Second Battle of the Marne In late June and early July of 1918 the Third Division prepared defensive positions for a possible German assault. As part of the French Ninth Army, the division’s defensive sector stretched 7.5 miles along the Marne River. Its orders were to hold their ground at all cost; any lost ground to be regained by immediate counterattacks. Early on 15 July, the Germans countered the division’s artillery barrage with their own, using gas and high explosive rounds. The German 10th and 36th Divisions began an immediate assault across Marne. It fell on the 30th and 38th Infantry Regiment sectors. The assault drove a wedge into the 38th’s front line. The 30th fell back and the

French 125th Division retreated. Desperate, the regiment adjusted its position to cover both anks and, ghting on three sides, squeezed the

German advancing forces between the two anks, exposing them to heavy shelling from artillery. By day’s end, six German regiments had failed to break-through. There the 38th earned its nom de guerre, Rock of the Marne.

1.9 CASE DETAIL

30”

Capt. Jesse Wooldridge describes the action on the battleeld early on 15 July 1918, as the German Army opened its last major oensive of the Great War.

“. . . . Newly captured prisoners began to give real information - a grand oensive was to be made [where] the Marne was only about 50 yards wide...We had 600 yards of [this] front all to ourselves . . . [When it began] it seemed [the Germans] expected their artil-lery to eliminate all resistance . . . French Ocers attached to our Brigade stated posi-tively there was never a bombardment to equal it at Verdun

At 3:30am the general re ceased and their creeping barrage started - behind which at 40 yards only, mind you, they came - with more machine guns than I thought the German Army owned

The enemy had to battle their way through the rst platoon on the river bank - then they took on the second platoon on the forward edge of the railway where we had a thousand times the best of it - but the [Germans] gradually wiped it out. My third platoon [took] their place in desperate hand to hand ghting, in which some got through only to be picked up by the fourth platoon which was deployed simultane-ously with the third. . . . By the time they struck the fourth platoon they were all in and easy prey.

It's God's truth that one Company of American soldiers beat and routed a full regiment of picked shock troops of the German Army...At ten o'clock . . . the Germans were carry-ing back wounded and dead [from] the river bank and we in our exhaustion let them do it - they carried back all but six hundred which we counted later and fty-two ma-chine guns. . . . We had started with 251 men and 5 lieutenants. . . . I had left 51 men and 2 second lieutenants. . . .”

Aisne-Marne Campaign The German oensive known as the Second Battle of the Marne, when it failed, became by gradations the Allied counteroensive victory known as the Aisne-Marne Campaign. The Third Division’s objective was to pin down the Germans to allow the French Sixth and Tenth Armies to advance. As part of the counteroensive, the division advanced across the Marne River from four positions and occupied Mont-St-Père by using pontoon bridges constructed by the 6th Engineers. After ten days of bitter ghting, the division captured the towns of Jaulgonne, Bois du Chanois, Le Charmel and Ronchères. At the end of July, the 32nd Division relieved the

Third from the front, which moved back to the Château-Thierry region for rest. Command was transferred from the French Corps to U.S. III Corps.

Meuse–Argonne Campaign The Meuse-Argonne Campaign was the last major Allied oensive. The Third Division became part of III Corps’ reserve, but by the 30 September the division had moved to V Corps’ area of operation and quickly relieved the inexperienced 79th Division. After nearly two weeks of ghting, the division successfully broke through the Hindenburg Line, gaining ground from Cierges-Romagne and Bois de Cunel to Bois de Fôret. After twenty-eight days of ghting, the division was relieved by the Fifth Division and formed III Corps’ reserve. The division rested and ret, rst at Montfauçon, then near the Tannois area.

They did not ght again because the Germans signed an armistice on 11 November 1918. The Meuse-Argonne Oensive was the deadliest AEF campaign of the war, with more than 26,000 killed (Division 1,729) and more than 95,000-wounded (Division 6,578).

An Army of Occupation When the war ended at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, the Third Army assumed command as the Army of Occupation in Germany. It comprised nine veteran divisions including the Third. On 17 November, the division began marching towards Germany. After ve days, it reached

Luxembourg, where it remained until 1 December. Then, it crossed two bridges into Germany, arriving on the Rhine River on 10

December 1918. For eight months the division maintained a permanent headquarters at Andernach. The last unit began its homeward journey on 28 August 1919.

The Third or “Marne” Division was the only division to earn six campaign clasps (Aisne, Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne, Saint-Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, and Defensive Sector). Back in the

United States, it was stationed at Camp Pike, Arkansas.

The Patch: Symbolism, Legend, and Lore The design of the Third Division Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (Division Patch) grew out of an order given by AEF commander Gen. John Joseph “Black Jack” Pershing which specied that each American division have a distinctive patch. This action was inspired by the 81st Division’s ‘Wildcat Patch,’ and since that time, the Army uses Shoulder Sleeve Insignia to identify unique commands and units.

During the Meuse-Argonne Campaign, Brig. Gen. Preston Brown, the division commander, conceptualized the division’s insignia as three diagonal white stripes on a eld of dark blue. Dark blue represents every American soldier’s loyalty, steadfastness, and devotion to the principles of right and justice. The three diagonal white stripes symbolize the division’s three major campaigns from The Great War (later called World War I)—The Marne, St. Mihiel, and the Meuse-Argonne—and its numerical designation as the Third Division.

Coming Home: The Interwar Years In 1922, the Third Division Headquarters was moved to Camp

Lewis, Washington, while the subordinate units were located throughout the West. In 1939–40, the division went through a major change with the Infantry and Artillery Brigade Headquarters disbanded. The 4th and 38th Infantry Regiments were lost and the

15th Infantry Regiment was added. The 18th and 76th Field

Artillery Regiments departed while the 10th Field Artillery

Regiment was broken into three battalions—10th, 39th, and 41st.

Intensive training focused on amphibious landings moved between Puget Sound, Washington, and San Diego and Fort Ord, California. The division relocated to Fort Ord after Pearl Harbor but several months later moved to Camp Pickett, Virginia. In autumn, 1942, the division shipped out from Norfolk, Virginia, as part of

Operation TORCH—the invasion of North Africa.

ABERCROMBIE, HUGH

Sergeant, U.S. Army

Battery A, 10th Field Artillery, 3d Division, A.E.F.

Date of Action: 15 July 1918

Citation: The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Hugh Abercrombie, Sergeant, U.S.

Army, for extraordinary heroism in action at Janvier

Farm, France, July 15, 1918. Sergeant Abercrombie, in charge of the ammunition detail, realizing that all the ammunition at the guns had been used by a barrage to prevent the enemy from crossing the

Marne River, immediately organized his detail and carried ammunition by hand from scattered piles whose locations were known to him alone, to the battery position, a distance of about a kilometer.

While so engaged, he was severely wounded but refused to be evacuated. After receiving rst-aid treatment he ordered that he be placed in a shallow trench, from which place he directed the supply of ammunition to the guns. His bravery and utter disregard of his wounded condition were an inspiration to his comrades.

JAMES, JESSE A.

Sergeant, U.S. Army

Company L, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, A.E.F.

Date of Action: 13 July 1918

Citation: The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Jesse A. James, Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Les Evaux, France, July 13, 1918. After many attempts to get patrols across the Marne had failed, Sergeant James alone swam the river, taking with Mm a wire, by which a boat containing two of his comrades was drawn across, without attracting the attention of the enemy.

The Gathering Storm In many ways World War II was a continuation of World War I, except for Japan and Italy, Allies who felt cheated by the postwar settlement and changed sides. A barely recovering Germany reeled under the weight of the Great Depression, which gave rise to the Nazi Party and its leader Adolf Hitler by 1933. Italy had become a fascist dictatorship under Mussolini in 1922. Hitler began a program of rearmament, then foreign aggression. When

Germany invaded Poland on 1 September 1939, Great Britain and

France declared war. The U.S.S. R. (Russia) remained neutral until attacked by Hitler in June 1941. The U.S. remained neutral until

7 December…
