NOTES:
1. Although additional items may be listed in each weapon's technical order (operator's manual), both AFSFC/S4WL and AFLCMC/EBW, AF Small Arms Program Office must approve each accessory before it is authorized for use by AF personnel on AF weapons. An item listed in an AF technical order (TO) and coded for AF use is usable on that specific weapon. An item having an NSN or listed in Fed Log does not constitute approval for AF use.
2. AF units/personnel are not authorized to procure or install commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) parts, accessories or optics on AF small arms and light weapons without approval from AFSFC/S4WL and AFLCMC/EBW.
3. Combat Arms personnel must exchange or install approved small arms and light weapons accessories that require disassembly of the weapon or alter the weapon’s original configuration (as issued). Combat Arms will annotate the AFTO Form 105 to reflect how the weapon was modified and with what commercial product. When the weapon is returned to “as issued” configuration, Combat Arms will annotate the AF Form 105 accordingly.
4. Items marked “YES” in the “QUAL REQ” column require training and certification by AF Combat Arms during AF qualification training.
5. Individuals are required to complete AF qualification training conducted by AF Combat Arms personnel on each type holster they will utilize as directed in AFI 36-2654, Combat Arms Program. Personnel are only authorized to use the type holster(s) annotated by Combat
Arms on their AF Form 522, USAF Ground Weapons Training Data. Live-fire may not be required, refer to AFI 36-2654 for detailed requirements. The purchase of the Elite Survival System Ankle and the Galco VHS Shoulder holsters will be purchased via LRS supply channels using DD Form 1348-6 and utilizing the Military Standard Requisitioning and Issue Procedures (MILSTRIP) for non-NSN items. If items are still unavailable or cannot be procured through the supporting LRS, units may purchase the item with a Government Purchase Card. See Defense Logistics Manual 4000.25-1, para C2.1.4.
6. The standard position for wear of the Safariland and Blackhawk SERPA holster is on the thigh (drop-leg). Individuals will wear the holster in the standard position when completing qualification. Unit Commanders may approve a different carrying position (i.e., hip or chest) based on mission needs, Combat Arms will provide dry fire training with the holster in the CC approved configuration, as long as they adhere to AFI 36-2654 guidance and do not compromise safety.
7. Individuals authorized to carry the pistol concealed must meet all requirements in AFI 31-117 for concealed carry and AFI 36-2654 for qualification training before being authorized to carry the weapon in this manner.
8. HQ AFOSI manages concealed carry holsters for the M11 and may deviate from this listing as required for mission needs.
9. Allowance Standard (AS) 538 available at https://usaf.dps.mil/:b:/r/teams/12599/AFKN_Docs/ASC%20Prefaces/ASC%20538%20SMALL%20ARMS.pdf?csf=1&web=1 . AS 538 is broken into functional sections by use of mission application identifications. Refer to the appropriate functional section to determine if a user is authorized a specific item.
10. Reviewed by Directed Energy Safety Board (DESB) and received FDA exemption for AF use. Requires CFM/G.O. written assumption of risk and AF Small Arms Engineer’s approval. Written justification of capability gap will be identified in the assumption of risk.
11. Multiple industry vendors produce sling mounts. Commercial mounts must not affect any function of the M4/M4A1 such as preventing the butt stock from fully collapsing. Commercial mounts must be removable from M4/M4A1s, allowing the system to return to original configuration upon turn-in. Mounts must be installed via vendor installation instructions. Any AF weapon parts removed to allow for installation of commercial mounts must be retained to be re-installed via TO instructions for weapon turn-in. Commercial sling mounts designed to connect to M4/M4A1 1913 rails do not count as a modification.
12. Approved COTS clearing barrels units may use with the new 5.56mm and 7.62mm enhanced performance rounds (EPR) including the M855Al, M80Al, M856Al and M62Al rounds.
13. Agencies may continue to use previously procured COTS clearing barrels approved by HQ/AFSFC/S4XW (now AFSFC/S4WL) (Note:
These clearing barrels are NOT authorized for use with the EPR). Check guidance in AFMAN 31-129, USAF Small Arms and Light Weapons Handling Procedures, for potential changes to clearing barrel guidance/policies before procurement.
14. Inspect the internal rubber seal for any indication of a discharge or visible damage. If any damage is apparent (other than a small hole where the bullet penetrated the rubber shield), return to manufacturer for reconditioning. Inspect powder coat for scratches or rust.
Remove rust and touch-up scratches with enamel or acrylic paint, as required. Inspect mounting hardware for security. Measure the depth of the muzzle insertion cavity to check for wear due to long term multiple muzzle insertions (Acceptable Range 2.75” to 3.125”:
Rejection Point depth exceeds 3.125”).
15. Organizations with justification to use other COTS clearing barrels may submit requests to AFSFC/S4WL through their MAJCOM/A4S for consideration by AF/A4SO Combat Arms.
16. Initial procurement of the DVO for M4A1 only is accomplished by SAPO; replacement DVO’s are unit funded. Units must retain the M68 originally shipped with the M4A1. If the M4A1 is later turned-in as excess or transferred to another unit, the owning unit must return it to the original configuration (M68 mounted) before turn-in.
17. The M110A1 ships with the Tango 6, DVO 7.62mm Optic (S&B for SF ADM UTC’s/Ft Bliss only); replacement DVO’s are unit funded.
* Authorized M4A1 users are SF, AFOSI, EOD, STS/CW, RQS, TACP, CCT and PJ, other units (if authorized in AS 538, will use the M4).
** The M18 MHS is NOT shipped with a holster.
For questions regarding this listing, contact AFSFC/S4WL, Weapons Branch at AFSFC.SFXW.1@us.af.mil DSN: 945-7040.
