2246-3 maximum depth of 6.4mm, it is proposed that the diameter of the tail shaft in the vicinity of the defect be reduced approximately 2.3mm (2 x (7.54mm – 6.4mm)). The resultant diameter would be approximately 645.7mm, 4.52mm above the minimum required ice-class diameter. The length of the diameter reduction shall extend from 3556mm from the aft end of the shaft to 5156mm from the aft end of the shaft, the defect would be approximately in the center of this area. A sketch of the diameter reduction location is included in Attachment F Ref 2.1. Further, the sides of the remaining approximately 6.4mm deep defect shall be ground out to a radius of 161.5mm (646mm / 4). A sketch of the resultant fully radiused repair is included in Attachment G REF 2.1 showing the diameter of the “repaired” defect on the surface of the shaft would be approximately 74mm in diameter.
