About this file
This is a technical specifications document for a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area and pore distribution analyzer to be procured by the Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service (USDA ARS). The instrument will measure surface area and micro- and mesopore distribution of soils, minerals, and other materials to support interagency research with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and soil health studies in U.S. farming systems. The analyzer must include two analysis stations with repeatability of less than 2% across the analysis range, an 8-station degassing accessory with 2 heating zones, and capability to perform 5-point BET analysis on two samples within 20 minutes. The equipment must measure both mesopores and micropores. Delivery is required to 10300 Baltimore Avenue, Building 001, Room 124, Beltsville, Maryland 20705 within 120 days of contract award.
The contractor is responsible for providing the instrument manuals and ensuring packaging and shipping in a sturdy container with adequate protective material. No government-furnished property will be provided. The related solicitation number is 1232SA26Q0516, and prospective contractors should review both the specifications document and the complete solicitation for additional procurement details and requirements.

Specifications Brunauer–Emmett–Teller Surface Area Analyzer
Background and Scope The item required is a Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area and pore distribution analyzer. This instrument will measure the surface area of soils, minerals, and other materials along with the distribution of micro- and mesopores. This data is critical to understanding the fundamental chemical differences between soils, which impact key properties such as fertility and soil health in agricultural crops. This instrument is needed for a series of experiments and field trials for our interagency agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and it will also be particularly useful for research on soil health in U.S. farming systems. This will provide tangible benefits for the U.S. EPA and also translate into increased profitability for the U.S. farmer in dryland regions through increasing understanding of how to build soil health in these regions. This research closely aligns with the goals of my laboratory and our research group, in addition to being an essential resource for collaboration within the agency and with external research partners.
