About this file
This Statement of Work (SOW) details a contract for the Missoula Fire Sciences Laboratory to purchase National Instruments (NI) data acquisition (DAQ) equipment to modernize its research infrastructure. The specific equipment required includes 10 Terminal Blocks (TB-4302), 3 Analog Input Modules (PXIe-4302), and 1 Multifunction I/O Device (USB-6423), all of which must be genuine NI parts compatible with existing laboratory systems and LabVIEW software.
The project aims to enhance the laboratory's data collection capabilities for wildfire behavior and combustion research by integrating modular DAQ systems with experimental apparatuses like combustion chambers and wind tunnels. Key objectives include designing a flexible DAQ system, establishing reliable sensor connectivity, and developing custom interfaces for experimental control and data processing. The equipment must be delivered within 30 days of contract award, and the solicitation is set aside for small businesses with a size standard of 650 employees under NAICS code 334512.

Project Analog Input Equipment Purchase
General Information
1.0 Scope of Work
The purpose of this project is to modernize and improve the data acquisition infrastructure at the Missoula Fire Sciences Laboratory through the implementation of more National Instruments (NI) data acquisition (DAQ) devices. The Missoula Fire Lab conducts advanced research into wildfire behavior, combustion processes, and fuel characteristics. Accurate and high-resolution data collection is critical for understanding the physical processes involved in wildland fire and for validating predictive fire behavior models.
The primary goal of this project is to integrate NI DAQ systems with a variety of experimental apparatuses used in fire experiments, such as combustion chambers, wind tunnels, and fuel testing rigs. This integration involves configuring a suite of analog and digital sensors—including thermocouples, heat flux sensors, load cells, pressure transducers, and flow meters—with the NI hardware to enable high-speed, synchronized data acquisition across multiple channels.
Objectives include:
• Designing and implementing a modular DAQ system using NI hardware (e.g., PXI systems) and LabVIEW software for flexible control and real-time data visualization.
• Establishing reliable sensor-to-DAQ connectivity and ensuring signal integrity for accurate measurements under extreme thermal and environmental conditions.
• Developing custom LabVIEW interfaces for experimental control, data logging, and automated data processing.
By leveraging the precision and versatility of NI DAQ systems, this project will enable researchers at the Missoula Fire Lab to collect more comprehensive datasets, improve experimental reproducibility, and support the development of more accurate fire models. Ultimately, this work contributes to advancing wildfire science and enhancing public safety through better-informed fire management practices.
2.0 Background
The Missoula Fire Sciences Laboratory requires a scalable and high-performance data acquisition system to support its ongoing fire behavior and combustion research. The lab has a history of using National Instruments (NI) technologies, with multiple NI PXI data acquisition (DAQ) systems already integrated into its experimental setups. These systems, coupled with LabVIEW software, are currently used to collect data from a variety of sensors such as thermocouples, heat flux transducers, and gas analyzers. The lab began using NI PXI systems several years ago as part of an effort to centralize and automate data collection. Over time, the number of PXI systems and LabVIEW toolkits has grown to accommodate the expanding research needs.
Today, the lab operates a network of NI PXI DAQ systems across various research zones. These systems are crucial for monitoring and collecting data from fire-related experiments. While the current setup is functional, there is a need to expand capabilities, improve system integration, data synchronization, and long-term storage solutions.
The lab’s vision is to create a more unified data acquisition system that supports current and future research needs. This includes enhancing system integration, improving data synchronization between multiple PXI systems, and streamlining data storage and analysis. The lab also aims to expand remote monitoring capabilities and further integrate real-time data with modeling tools. The lab will continue to rely on NI PXI hardware and LabVIEW software for data collection and analysis, with an emphasis on improving system interoperability and data management for long-term research and storage.
