2. SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION FOR BRAND NAME BASED ON CONTRACTOR'S UNIQUE QUALIFICATIONS OR NATURE OF THE ACQUISITION The Naval Innovative Science and Engineering program accepted and funded a proposal for NSWC to evaluate current wireless vibration sensor technology to determine if any of the current technology can be utilized by the fleet on navy ships. The three goals of the proposal are: Reduced labor & material costs associated with hull sensor(s) hard wiring; Labor costs reduced by avoiding manual machinery data collection tasks; Crew safety, as potentially dangerous data collection is avoided; Data accuracy, as fully automatic data collection avoids potential human errors.
If not approved, NSWC will not be able to complete the evaluation of the wireless sensors and will need lo abandon our proposal. This unique and specialized wireless and portable equipment is spec'd out to meet current Navy requirements, and thus must maintain the same brand for compatibility features. Reworking this solution is not plausible, as any other similar unit would need to be reworked into this system, causing unmeasurable compatibility issues. This NISE proposa1 was submitted at the request of NAVSEA with the intent of leveraging our findings on future navy ships. Not completing this evaluation will hinder NAVSEA in moving forward with wireless technology on navy ships. This effort includes labor and material valued at $3 over years with potential for further projects in the future.
3. MARKET SURVEY
In order to evaluate the current technology, NSWC has narrowed down the field to two sensors that utilize the ISA l 00 non-proprietary operating system protocol. All other wireless sensors on the market require the purchase of a proprietary operating system that limits the use to only products designed and sold by that particular vendor. The ISA 100 protocols is a universally accepted wireless protocol that any company can leverage for use.
