About this file

This document is an Equipment Specification for the MIDAS Radial Collimator, part of an upgrade to the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) HB-2A POWDER instrument at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The specification details technical requirements for fabricating a radial collimator that will improve neutron scattering data collection, including precise design parameters such as inner and outer radii of 500-950 mm, 308 total foil blades, a 0.502-degree blade angle, and a 316 mm active height at the outer radius.

The specification outlines comprehensive requirements for the vendor, including material specifications (polyethylene terephthalate foils with gadolinium oxide coating), non-magnetic structural materials, individual blade installation and tensioning, and specific quality assurance, documentation, and packaging standards. The collimator is designed to be mounted on an oscillation table that rotates ±2 degrees, aimed at reducing background noise and improving neutron scattering experiment throughput by approximately 30x. The document includes detailed submission requirements, inspection protocols, and verification criteria for final acceptance by Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

1. INTRODUCTION

The High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) HB-2A POWDER instrument is undergoing an improvement project to upgrade the detector with the Modular Interdigitated Detector Array System (MIDAS). This new detector upgrade will allow for continual coverage of the powder diffraction neutron scattering volume without rotation of the detector, as the current instrument operates. This will provide a significant increase in instrument experiment throughput by decreasing scan times by roughly 30x. Part of the new detector array will require a fine radial collimator to filter the sample scattered neutrons and provide adequate detector resolution for proper data acquisition. The new radial collimator will require an oscillation system (±2 degrees) to effectively reduce background noise and unnecessary scattering from the sample environment. The collimator will be mounted above the oscillation system and the assembly will be located inside the instrument shielding between the sample center and the detector array. This document will outline the technical specifications for the fabrication and procurement of the MIDAS radial collimator.

2. SCOPE

This equipment specification defines requirements for materials, fabrication, inspection, quality assurance, and delivery to Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) of a complete radial collimator assembly. The Collimator assembly will be installed on the MIDAS instrument located on beamline HB- 2A at HFIR. The High-Resolution Collimator Assembly, hereinafter referred to as the Collimator, is detailed in the following sections. Any ancillary components not specifically defined but required for complete assembly, shall be considered included herein, unless specifically excluded.

Herein, Vendor refers to parties responsible for providing the fabricated Collimator within the scope of this specification. ORNL refers to UT-Battelle, LLC and its representatives including Oak Ridge National Laboratory and HFIR.

The Vendor is responsible for detailed design, fabrication, inspection, packaging, and shipment of the Collimator assembly in accordance with the requirements of this specification. Any exceptions to this specification shall be clearly noted as such in the Vendor’s fabrication documentation. Any exceptions indicated by the Vendor will require approval from ORNL prior to acceptance.

The Collimator will mount on an oscillation table system that will rotate ±2 degrees at a variable frequency but the oscillation drive system is not part of this procurement. Alignment locations, such as dowel holes, will be required for mounting to the oscillation table and will be detailed within this document.

3. FABRICATION DOCUMENTATION

The radial collimator shall be fabricated as defined by all requirements in this equipment specification. The vendor will provide final detailed design documentation to ORNL for review. Approval of the final design will require written confirmation in order to begin fabrication.

4. TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

The technical requirements provided in this document outline the optimal design specifications for the fabrication of the MIDAS radial collimator and have been created using [1] and [2] as references. They have been developed with the instrument science team, engineering and designer support. Figure 1 shows a rendering of the conceptual Collimator assembly, and Table 1 outlines the specifications summary for the collimator design.
