SOW for F-35 Vertical Tail installation and removal tool

1. Scope

1.1. Lockheed Martin contracted with two companies in the past (2015-2016) to develop and build a tool that will hold and position a 60 lb. torque tool to install the F-35 Vertical Tail. This tool has helped their production immensely and HAFB wants to purchase the same tooling to remove and install the F-35 Veridical Tails.

After further investigation of the positioning and holding tool, it would require modifications from the original Lockheed Martins handling fixture (Model 800 Linear Rail, 72" System, PN: 28210-A800CSLR-72). The modifications for the lifting device would have to reach higher and further at HAFB because the horizontal stabilizers are not always removed and the aircraft are lifted on jack stands.

The torque tool will remain the same with no required changes (PN: ARS3FA-M1000-)

2. Design specification

2.1. Torque Tool

The torque tool shall be built to the same or better requirements as PN: ARS3FA-M1000 that was built for Lockheed Martin.

2.1.1. Torque tool to install and uninstall 1-1/8” Hex Bolt and 1-1/4” Hex Bolts (torque values from 300-500 ft. lbs.)

2.1.2. All final torques applied to bolts will be completed by mechanic.

2.1.3. Torque tool shall come equipped with anti-torque so operator does not have to apply opposite force.

2.2. Ergonomic lifting and holding device

The lifting and holding device will incorporate all the features of Model 800 Linear Rail, 72" System, PN: 28210-A800CSLR-72 that was used in Lockheed Martin’s tooling except it will be capable of a total reach of 130” from the ground to center line of the torque tool and a reach of 113” from the vertical lift column to torque tool. All mechanical and structural design changes shall be made for the increased moments incurred with the new requirements.

Note: any improvements over the years from previous model will be acceptable.

2.2.1. All positions of the ergonomic arm shall be able to hold the 50+ Lb. torque tool without tipping the unit over.

2.2.2. Arm vertical lift point pivot angles to have 45° range and at the arm midpoint pivot angles to have 75° (105° from straight out). Fig 1

2.2.3. Torque tool angle of movement to be 180° Fig 1

2.2.4. Total reach of 113” inches out from the lift vertical support. Fig 2

2.2.5. Total reaches 130” max / 78” min from the floor with the torque tool (center of Tool) Fig 2

2.2.6. Arm holding torque tool to have +/-6° vertical movement. Fig 2

2.2.7. Arm end effector to hold torque tool at point of use without falling or swinging out of the way.

2.2.8. All axis movement such as rotation, vertical, horizontal for the torque tool (individually and combined) not to exceed 2lbs of force by the operator. Fig 3

2.2.9. Major positioning of equipment to be accomplished using the front control station on the floor and then locked into place via wheel locks.

2.2.10. Final height, horizontal and rotation adjustment for tool connection to bolts shall be controlled by mechanic while on top of jet.

2.2.11. All exposed surfaces and features to be weather resistant image3.png image1.png image2.png
