The potable water has calcium hardness around 40°Fr (French degrees). Therefore it is necessary to soften water before using it in machines with electrical heating and for sanitary hot water production.

3-01-4-1: Domestic cold water (not softened)

The Facility is supplied with cold water by means of a connection to the main existing distribution pipes. The interior cold water network shall be separated of the indoor fire protection network.

An anti-return system will be provided on the potable water piping at its connection point with the building, in accordance with NFPA-13 requirements, EN 1717 and the BELGAQUA code, to protect the outside network as to the building.

Another anti-return system is foreseen on the filling pipe of the heating water.

The potable water has calcium hardness of around 40°Fr (French degrees). Therefore it is necessary to soften water before using it in machines with electrical heating and for sanitary hot water production.

3-01-4-2: Domestic hot water (softened)

Hot water is produced by a solar water system and stored in three tanks (0,5 m³ per unit) located in the heating room.

Sanitary hot water is distributed at an average temperature of 60°C by a continuously circulating loop network.

A regular temperature increase cycle (anti-Legionnaire's disease treatment) is programmed.

This allows the user to control the temperature of the water distributed in loop and to program the periods for heat treatment.

The water shall be softened before heating up.

3-01-4-3: Softened cold water

The domestic cold water network, will be fed with softened water.

Softened water shall be produced by means of a duplex of ion exchangers. Each exchanger shall be equipped with its salt basin. A volumetric and chronometric regulator shall be provided in order to program the alternative regeneration of each unit. The system shall be designed so that the two units can work in parallel during high consumption periods.

Domestic water on site probably has a hardness around 40°French (to be checked by a water analysis in charge of the successful bidder to be supported by the present contractor).

A water softening system shall be installed for the water supply to sanitary installations and to fill up the heating installation. The capacity of the softeners will be calculated for the maximum water demand. Water will be softened to 12 – 13° Fr.

An automatic back flushing filter will also be provided

The hardness level of the water must be continuously controlled by a testomat 2000 after softening. The results must be sent to the BMS-system.

3-01-4-5: Laying specifications

Method of laying the cold water, softened water and hot water

The piping shall be protected wherever there is a risk of it being affected by cement, lime or any other corrosive product.

All precautions shall be taken to avoid noise due to the pipes rubbing against their brackets or building elements as they expand or contract.

All steps shall be taken to neutralize the effects of pipe expansion. The steps envisaged (curves, stainless steel bellows-type expansion joints with interior or exterior guides, loops, fixed points, etc.) will be presented before execution by a note and plans subject to COR’s approval.

All installations must be able to be drained at the start of the risers, at all low points and at the points shown in the plans to enable drainage of a particular part of the system.

Drain valves shall be fitted in accessible places.

After tapping into a main pipe, a shut-off valve must be fitted every time.

Up to and including ND 50, the valves will be full-flow ball valves. Over ND 50, butterfly valves will be used.

Control of legionnaires' disease

The system must be laid such that no water is allowed to stagnate and it must be fully lagged.

Thermometers on the output and return legs of the domestic hot water loop shall allow temperatures to be checked, especially during heat treatment phases.

A sampling point (plugged valve) must be provided after the public water meter and on the return leg of the domestic hot water loop.

Specific details for the domestic hot water system

The temperature of the hot water loop, kept in circulation, must be between 60°C and 65°C on output and higher to 55°C on return.

The temperature must be increased to 70°C at all points once every 24h. This procedure is directed and carried out by the maintenance division operating this installation.

Bypasses without a loop shall not exceed 5 m in length or 3 litres in capacity.

Protection of embedded piping

Built-in Polyethylene/alu/Polyethylene piping shall be used.

Such piping shall also withstand heat treatments, as they have the same properties as the visible pipes.

The contractor shall not embed pipe joints.

Piping support

All piping or pipe racks shall be fastened by means of hot-dip galvanized steel sections and rubber-lined clamps.

The supports will be designed to avoid the propagation of noise due to the expansion of the piping.

Metal-on-metal contact will therefore be prohibited.

A neoprene strip will be placed between the piping and the mounting clamp.

The supports will be studied taking account of the various fluids carried; individual supports for each fluid will not be accepted.

The supports will be fastened to the wall using expansion bolts sized according to the weight of the equipment.

Sufficient space will be left between the pipe and the support, between parallel pipes (wall or riser, for example) to enable the lagging to be fitted without crushing.

No pipe shall be hung from another pipe, except for small connections where no other means can be found.

Feed trough walls

Through walls, internal partitions and hollow floors, the pipework shall cross the steel expansion sleeves of a minimum tickness of 2 mm sealed into the walls.

The gap between the expansion sleeve and the pipework (or fire retardant accessories if it is a fire retardant wall) must be filled in with non-combustible insulating material that is not noisy during expansions (e.g. mineral wool).

The expansion sleeves extend at least 2 cm beyond the finished walls, ceilings and finished floors.

The "fire retardant" nature of any wall must be not be altered by the presence of pipework and expansion sleeves.

To this end, for any diameter, a fire retardant accessories shall be used :

Fire resistant flexible strip for Ø < 40 mm

Fire resistant collar for Ø ≥ 40 mm

Insulation of the domestic supply water systems

The pipes carrying cold domestic supply water (all accessories included) will be protected against the risk of condensation and excess heating up (> 25°C), by means of closed-cell synthetic foam lagging bonded to the entire surface.

Pipes carrying hot water (all accessories included) will be insulated against heat losses by means of rock wool tubes. There are to be no gaps in the lagging at the supports.

The thickness and quality shall be such that, at a nominal flow rate, the water shall not lose more than 5°C over the route of the domestic hot water loop following the longest circuit.

The tubes shall be supplied precut. Their inside diameters shall exactly match the outside diameters of the piping.

Fittings of hot potable water and cold potable networks must be insulated.

3-01-5: Tests

The network shall be completely washed and disinfected According to NBN EN 806 after the end of the works and tests, and before the commissioning.
