3.0 DETAILED SCOPE OF WORK
3.1 Site Survey & Utility Clearances
5. Utility Locates: The Contractor shall notify the Ohio Utilities Protective Service and obtain Ohio Army National Guard Facilities Management excavation approval prior to saw-cutting or trenching.
6. Topographic & Grade Verification: Verify cross-slope and crown of roadway.
Spikes must be installed perfectly flush (±1/16 inch) with final roadway surface elevations to eliminate impact shock and ponding.
3.2 Demolition, Saw-Cutting, and Excavation
7. Full-depth saw-cut existing concrete or asphalt pavement without micro-fracturing adjacent slab edges.
8. Excavate a reinforced concrete vault trench sized to manufacturer specifications (minimum 18 inches wide by 18 inches deep, or as engineered for the structural steel casing).
9. Provide positive subbase compaction (minimum 98% Modified Proctor density per ASTM D1557) beneath the trench bed.
3.3 Drainage Infrastructure Integration
10. Flush-mounted housings must not hold standing water. The Contractor shall core and install a schedule 40 / SDR-35 PVC positive gravity drain line (minimum 3-inch interior diameter) running from each housing trench to an adjacent storm drain inlet, catch basin, or daylight discharge swale equipped with a rodent screen.
11. In areas without accessible storm connections, install an engineered crushed-rock dry well (minimum 1 cubic yard volume of clean ASTM No. 57 aggregate wrapped in geotextile filter fabric) below frost line depth.
12. Include an inline cleanout fixture accessible from the shoulder or pull box.
3.4 Structural Concrete Encasement
13. Form and pour 4,000 PSI compressive strength (28-day) Portland cement concrete encasement around the structural spike housing.
14. Reinforce with #4 or #5 ASTM A615 Grade 60 rebar grid tying the housing anchors into the surrounding pavement slab.
15. Vibrate concrete thoroughly to eliminate voids beneath the spike trough flange and around anchor studs.
16. Float and broom-finish concrete flush with adjacent pavement grade.
3.5 Mechanical Spike Unit Installation
17. Install modular flush-mount traffic spike units across the full width of the active lane (typically 12 to 14 feet per lane). Ensure units cover the tire track envelope without allowing bypass along curblines or lane edges.
18. Fasten using 316 stainless steel high-tensile anchor hardware or embedded factory studs, torqued to manufacturer specifications, with anti-seize compound.
19. Install high-grade silicone or elastomeric polyurethane joint sealant conforming to ASTM C920 between the steel top plates and surrounding concrete pavement.
3.6 Speed Attenuation & Safety Equipment
20. MUTCD Warning Signs: Post two (2) high-intensity retroreflective fluorescent diamond-grade (Type IX or XI) aluminum signs:
• Upstream Warning (W50-1 mod): "STOP / SEVERE TIRE DAMAGE / DO NOT ENTER" with directional arrow symbol.
