Attachment I: Mock Task Order
Business Growth/Technical Acceleration Services Support – Lean Product Development
BACKGROUND
Since its inception over twenty years ago, the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) has focused on helping manufacturers increase profit-lines and streamline processes through the implementation of lean manufacturing techniques. But as manufacturing changes, MEP continuously adapts to offer manufacturers the programs and services most needed.
Building on early efforts, MEP also deploys services that work both sides of the balance sheet – reducing costs and increasing revenues. MEP works not only to help manufacturers with problem-solving and day-to-day operations, but also on developing new sales, new markets and new products. The growth services focus on harnessing technology and innovation to encourage business growth and innovation of manufacturing. We must continue to evolve the MEP program – insuring we are responsive to U.S. manufacturing needs of the future.
A major strategic focus for NIST MEP is the further development of growth and innovation services for clients, as well as the development of partnerships to support the delivery of these services – particularly in the area of Lean Product Development. MEP requires continued assistance to build these programs throughout the country, provide coaching and training to practitioners, and directly deliver services to manufacturers.
MEP is requesting support in growth, innovation and technology acceleration services focused on Lead Product Development supporting the MEP mission and the Next Generation
Strategies. Increasing manufacturers’ capacity for innovation resulting in profitable sales growth is the overarching strategy for the MEP.
Lean Product Development helps U.S. small and medium manufacturers understand the drivers of value, the sources of waste and the best practices that help product development flow through the system. It eliminates the friction in product development while helping get ideas to market faster without compromising quality or increasing cost. In the current economic climate, doing more with less is a mandate for virtually any firm, particularly with respect to new product introductions. Lean Product Development and Design methods and principles can help companies overcome time to market, portfolio management, design and development resource and new product cost challenges.
