1. Describe your experience serving schools targeted for school improvement and the impact you were able to have in terms of student achievement.

I served as an Assistant Principal and Principal in Fairfax County Public Schools for 15 years in 3 distinctly diverse schools, Franconia, Fox Mill, and London Towne Elementary Schools. Each school focused on continuous school improvement and student achievement. As Principal of London Towne Elementary School (LTES), I was responsible for the academic achievement of 700+ students. For the 2023-24 school year, London Towne was designated as a Project Momentum school due to a decrease in the total number of students passing on the reading and science state assessments especially within the Black and Student with Disabilities subgroups. As we needed to improve, our focused on the following to improve student achievement:

· Identifying what students needed to know and where our gaps were in instruction/programming

· Using data to inform our instructional next steps including what needed to be retaught to entire classes/grade levels and which students needed additional remediation

· Identifying the next steps necessary as school staff to ensure all students learned at the highest levels

· Strengthening Tier 1 instruction across the board so fewer students needed remediation

· Creating structures to systematically address the barriers impacting student learning

· Meeting weekly to unpack standards, pace, and plan effective lessons based on student assessment data On the end of the year assessments, LTES maintained and/or increased the passing rate of all students in reading and science moving us from a Priority School to a Universal School. Students with Disabilities and Black Student Subgroups both had a pass rate of 75% which was a significant increase from the previous years of under 70%. In Science, the pass percentage rate increased from 69.5% to 72% meeting the state passing rate of 70% for accreditation. LTES was fully accredited in all areas which is a direct result to the work of our collaborative teams, the structures put in place, and the focus on data to inform our instructional practices.

2. Describe your experience leading PLCs (i.e collaborative teams).

As a classroom teacher, I attended a conference with Rick and Becky Dufour, authors of Professional Learning Communities and Collaborative Teams in Professional Learning Communities, etc. and pioneers of PLCs. I returned to my school to work with my team and other teacher leaders to change the trajectory of student achievement based on the 4 critical questions of a PLC:

· What do we want all students to know and be able to do?

· How will we know if they learn it?

· How will we respond when some students do not learn?

· How will we extend the learning for students who are already proficient?

That conference became the foundation of my work with teams and schools as I honed my skills as a facilitator of collaborative team meetings both as a teacher and as an administrator. In my most recent role as Principal, I worked to ensure that as a school staff, we maximized student potential, learning, and empowered staff to make sound instructional decisions for students. I’ve worked with grade level and school teams to address the needs of students and am grounded in using the essential questions to support teacher planning, pacing, and student achievement.

3. Describe your knowledge of, and experience with, the Project Momentum Gears framework.

I am familiar with and well versed in the tenets of a professional learning community and the collective steps educators need to take to ensure students meet the learning targets necessary to be successful in school and beyond. Additionally, it is critical that we develop the individual and collective strengths of our teachers and grade level teams which is possible through weekly collaborative team meetings. As Principal of London Towne Elementary School, I worked with teachers and instructional coaches to build teacher capacity, efficacy, and best practices around instruction.

4. Describe your experience with coaching teachers To have successful students who can meet the learning goals of the division and state, coaching teachers/faculty was a necessity. Teachers like students need a coach to help them hone their skill and to maximize their individual efficacy when working with students. As a coach, I provide teachers with a safe space to reflect on their practice, the effectiveness of their lessons, the learning outcomes of their students and focus on the next steps in improving instruction and learning for students.

5. Describe your experience with coaching teachers The following is a response to the question regarding my experience supporting teams virtually. My experience with leading teams virtually began in March 2020 during the worldwide pandemic/closure of schools and businesses. In FCPS, we finished out the 2019-20 school year virtually and began the 2020-21 school year completely virtual. Over the course of that school year, we moved to a hybrid environment. As such, I led countless virtual meetings and am comfortable using the technology associated with virtual environments (ZOOM, Goggle Docs, etc.).

Please note that failure to attach an explanation may result in a determination that the information does not meet the statutory trade secret definition.
